Job summary

The Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant Inc. in Ellicott City, MD is seeking a dynamic Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to partner with the Director of Nursing in leading daily clinical operations of a Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living community.

The role focuses on hands-on leadership, staff mentoring, quality initiatives, and regulatory compliance, with a Monday–Friday 4:00 PM–12:00 AM schedule and on-call rotation.

Qualifications

  • Nursing degree from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience in healthcare.
  • At least 1 year of rehabilitative/restorative nursing experience.
  • Current, active RN license in the state.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in daily nursing operations.
  • Lead committees (Quality Assurance, Infection Control, Policy, Budget) in the Director's absence.
  • Develop and review nursing policies, procedures, and care standards.
  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, recruitment, and supervision.
  • Ensure RN, LPN, CNA coverage across all shifts.
  • Ensure HIPAA and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in admissions, care planning, and family communication.

Salary Range: $79,818.00 - $99,772.00 Salary

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and dynamic Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to partner with our Director of Nursing in leading the daily clinical operations of our healthcare community, including both Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living. In this role, you will provide hands‑on leadership, support quality care initiatives, mentor and develop nursing staff, and help ensure the highest standards of resident care and regulatory compliance.

Your leadership will play a vital role in fostering a collaborative, team‑oriented culture while enhancing the overall resident and family experience. The ideal candidate is a strong clinical leader who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, is passionate about resident‑centered care, and is committed to supporting and empowering nursing teams.

This full‑time leadership position is scheduled Monday through Friday from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM and includes participation in on‑call responsibilities as well as a manager‑on‑Duty rotation.

What You’ll Do as an LVMG Assistant Director of Nursing:
  • Support the Director of Nursing in managing the day‑to‑day operations of the nursing department.
  • Assume leadership responsibilities in the Director’s absence, including participation on key committees (e.g., Quality Assurance, Infection Control, Policy, Budget).
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and periodic review of nursing policies, procedures, and care standards.
  • Collaborate with departmental budgeting and resource planning.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, scheduling, evaluation, and supervision of nursing staff.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels of RNs, LPNs, and CNAs across all shifts.
  • Oversee staff performance, conduct evaluations, and support corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to professional licensure requirements and internal policies.
  • Promote staff development through training, mentorship, and leadership education.
  • Monitor and ensure delivery of safe, effective nursing care according to care plans and resident needs.
  • Conduct regular rounds to assess care quality, staff performance, and resident satisfaction.
  • Support physicians during rounds and follow up on orders, documentation, and visits.
  • Supervise medication administration, treatments, and infection control practices.
  • Participate in admissions, care planning, discharge planning, and resident/family communication.
  • Ensure individualized care plans are followed, updated, and effectively communicated to staff.
  • Uphold residents’ rights, dignity, and confidentiality, ensuring all care is delivered respectfully.
  • Address resident concerns, grievances, and incidents, documenting actions and resolutions.
  • Coordinate the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program under RN supervision.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, and CDC guidelines.
  • Assist in preparing for and participating in regulatory inspections and audits.
  • Support and enforce infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Maintain clean, safe work and care environments for residents and staff.
  • Ensure staff are trained and compliant with PPE usage and exposure protocols.
  • Report incidents, accidents, and safety concerns as per policy.
  • Maintain clear, accurate documentation in resident records and department reports.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, care conferences, and committee discussions.
  • Provide updates and recommendations to the Director on department operations and care concerns.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
What You’ll Need as a Assistant Director of Nursing:
Education | Experience
  • Nursing Degree from an accredited college, university, or hospital‑based program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience in a hospital, long‑term care facility, or related healthcare setting.
  • At least 1 year of experience or training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Must hold a current, active, and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment in handling sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with individuals at all levels, including residents, staff, families, external vendors/authorities, and the public.
  • Strong attention to detail in writing, proofreading, managing priorities, and meeting deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment, demonstrating a cooperative, respectful, and compassionate approach to colleagues and resident care.
  • Skilled in the use of standard office equipment and technology.
  • Maintains professionalism, composure, and a positive attitude when managing challenging situations.
  • Physically able to move throughout the workday and lift up to 35 pounds using safe handling practices.
  • May be necessary to assist with resident evacuation during emergency situations.
  • Complies with organizational health and safety requirements, including vaccination policies or valid exemptions.
