Responsibilities

  • Monitor transitions to and from cafeteria.
  • Report safety concerns to teachers or administrators.
  • Maintain orderly cafeteria and report incidents as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Participate in required training and meetings.

Job Summary

TheLunch Monitor is responsible for supervising students during lunch and ensuring a safe, positive, and orderly environment throughout the lunch period. This position works 10 hours per week, from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 10:30 AM–12:30 PM on Wednesdays. The Lunch Monitor supports student safety, appropriate behavior, and smooth transitions while working collaboratively with school staff to support the overall well-being of students.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Supervise students during lunch and ensure a safe, respectful, and positive environment.

  • Monitor student behavior and reinforce school expectations and appropriate cafeteria behavior.

  • Assist students with questions, concerns, or minor needs during the lunch period.

  • Monitor students during transitions to and from the cafeteria and other designated lunch areas.

  • Ensure students remain in designated areas and follow established school procedures.

  • Respond appropriately to student conflicts, behavioral concerns, and emergencies and notify appropriate school staff when necessary.

  • Assist with maintaining an orderly and clean cafeteria or lunch area.

  • Report safety concerns, incidents, or student issues to the appropriate teacher or administrator.

  • Maintain effective communication with students and school staff.

  • Participate in required training and meetings as assigned.

  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.

  • Regular and predictable attendance.

Cognitive Demands:

  • Supervision of multiple students in a busy lunch environment.

  • Maintaining awareness of student behavior and potential safety concerns.

  • Reinforcing school rules, routines, and expectations.

  • Exercising sound judgment when responding to student needs or conflicts.

  • Maintaining a calm and positive environment.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout the lunch period.

  • Occasionally bend, kneel, squat, or reach while assisting students or addressing the lunch environment.

  • Occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

  • Move throughout the cafeteria, hallways, and other designated areas to supervise students.

  • Withstand moderate to high noise levels in the cafeteria and school environment.

  • Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Previous experience working with children or in a school, childcare, or youth program setting preferred.

  • Ability to maintain a safe, positive, and structured environment for students.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Ability to remain calm and professional when addressing student behavior or concerns.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and other school staff.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions.

  • Ability to meet all applicable school employment requirements, including successful completion of required background checks.
