Job summary

Outward Technologies is seeking a Research Scientist to develop multiphysics software for lunar soil and terrain simulations using DEM and continuum methods. The role focuses on dynamic soil-wheel interactions, validating models with lab and mission data, and extending tools for terrestrial applications.

The position allocates 80% to design/development, 15% to commercialization, and 5% to grant proposals, with a path toward open-source collaboration and grant-backed projects.

Qualifications

  • Developing multiphysics models with granular materials or particle-based systems.
  • Developing physics-based numerical models using continuum/Discrete methods.
  • Using experimental data to calibrate modeled response of discrete systems.

Responsibilities

  • Generate dynamic soil mechanics models using DEM and continuum methods.
  • Analyze experimental data from lab or rover missions to inform models.
  • Optimize software to reduce computational time and improve performance.
  • Plan projects involving multiphysics simulations of granular materials.
  • Write technical proposals for research projects in terramechanics and additive construction.
  • Identify dual-use applications for software in terrestrial industries.
  • Prepare technical documents and presentations for stakeholders and funding agencies.
  • Assist in multiphysics modeling of lunar surface construction and resource extraction.
