Job summary

Dane County Library Services has two limited term vacancies for a Literacy Mentor Intern in Madison, WI. LTEs are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

Under supervision, mentors will support Dream Bus participants across multiple sites, fostering reading interest, adapting curricula, and tracking progress for grant reporting. Requires some post-high school education and experience with diverse populations.

DEFINITION

Under the supervisor of the Dane County Library Director and Dream Bus Librarian, carries out initiatives of Violence Prevention Grant by providing literacy mentorship to Dream Bus participants at Madison Estates, Park Cedar, Kennedy Heights, Meadowlands and Harmony apartments.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Becomes familiar with project curriculum and adapts curriculum as necessary by location. Becomes acquainted with site leadership at the various locations. Attends outreach events for families to build trust and invite participation. Establishes relationships with youth at each location. Fosters a love of reading through reading aloud to youth, empower children to choose books of interest to them, explores various formats, such as graphic novels, poetry or audiobooks, engage in literacy activities, utilize discussion, writing and drawing to reflect on reading. Works with individual site junior mentors to support children' s literacy. Tracks participant progress through individual notes. Tracks necessary statistics for grant reporting. Creates written and visual engagement aids for participants.

Education, Training and Experience:

Must have some post-high school education. Must have experience working with children, especially elementary school ages. Must have experience working with diverse populations.

Special Requirements

Must possess v alid driver’s license; must be willing to drive small box truck with training; 12-month commitment; attendance at weekly site stops; must be available evenings and weekends as needed for programs. Also refer to the “Physical and Environmental Work Requirements” section below.

Background Check Statement

Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. For Bilingual Positions:

1. Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.).
2. Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job.

If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Mentorship work is done on the Dream Bus, a mobile library. Preparation and planning work is done in an office environment with shared computers. Literacy mentors report to work at Dream Bus headquarters and drive the Readmobile to the services sites.

Proficiency in reading and writing. Proficient in Microsoft office; ability to use Canva or other visual creative tools is preferred. Ability to organize and work productively with minimal supervision. Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with fellow workers, agency partners, volunteers and the public. Enthusiasm for working as part of a team. Ability to perform assigned functions with a minimum of error. Ability to be flexible and try new approaches. Strong literacy skills. Ability read to confidently.
