Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL, is seeking a licensed practical nurse (LPN) for the ACE/Highlands 4 North unit. Under supervision, you will provide nursing care to post-surgical and geriatric patients, orient families, collect assessments, and report findings to the RN.

The unit is 23 beds with honored geriatrics and a focus on patient-centered care at UAB Hospital-Highlands. Qualified candidates must hold an Alabama LPN license, BLS, and may need ACLS/PALS depending on the unit; this role

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing Program or equivalent.
• Currently licensed or licensed by endorsement as an LPN by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• ACLS and/or PALS certification may be required depending on the unit/department.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to patients using the nursing process and hospital standards.
• Orient patients and family to the surrounding environment, acting as a patient advocate.
• Collect patient assessment data and notify RN of potential problems.
• Evaluate patient response to care, document delivery, and respond to emergencies.

Job Highlights

The Hospitalist/Acute Care for Elders (ACE) 2 Unit or "Highlands 4 North" is a 23-bed acute care unit located at UAB Hospital-Highlands that provides care to post-surgical patients, as well as those transferred from the emergency department, ICU, or admitted from a physician office. This unit also provides care to some geriatric patients transferred from the ACET Unit. The ACE Unit is the very first of its kind in Alabama and is nationally recognized for addressing the health care needs of geriatric patients. UAB Hospital-Highlands combines the feel of a community hospital - including neighborhood location - with the same expertise and technology available at our flagship facility.

Job Description

• Under general supervision, to provide nursing care to patients based on the nursing process, UAB Hospital Standards of Nursing Care, and UAB Hospital policies and procedures while ensuring quality of care.
• To orient patients and family members to surrounding environment, acting as a patient advocate.
• To collect patient assessment data and notify RN of potential problems.
• To evaluate patient s response to care and report findings to RN, document delivery of patient care, effectively respond to emergency situations, demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, meet patient s educational needs, and serve as a role model to other members of the patient care team.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing Program or equivalent required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
• Currently licensed or licensed by endorsement as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
