Position Overview

St. Joseph School in Needham, Massachusetts, is seeking a caring, enthusiastic, and dedicated Long-Term Substitute Teacher for Grade 3 to cover a maternity leave. This position will provide an opportunity to become an integral part of our school community while supporting the academic, social-emotional, and spiritual growth of our third-grade students.

The ideal candidate will be a warm, collaborative, and organized educator who is committed to creating a positive and engaging classroom environment. The long-term substitute will be responsible for maintaining the classroom routines, expectations, curriculum, and instructional practices established by the classroom teacher while providing consistency and stability for students throughout the leave.

The successful candidate will work closely with the school administration, grade‑level colleagues, specialists, and support staff to ensure a smooth transition and a successful experience for students and families.

Essential Responsibilities

• Assume responsibility for the daily instruction and supervision of a third‑grade classroom.
• Implement established lesson plans, curriculum, classroom routines, and expectations.
• Provide engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction across core academic subjects, including:
• Religion
• English Language Arts
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social Studies
• Foster a classroom environment that is welcoming, respectful, structured, and supportive of all learners.
• Support students' social‑emotional development and reinforce St. Joseph School's schoolwide expectations and SEL practices.
• Establish positive relationships with students while maintaining consistent classroom routines and expectations.
• Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate support and enrichment based on individual student needs.
• Collaborate with Learning Center staff, counselors, specialists, and other members of the student support team as appropriate.
• Communicate professionally and appropriately with families regarding student progress, classroom experiences, and school-related matters.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assignments, assessments, and other classroom responsibilities.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and other school activities as appropriate.
• Follow all school policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Participate in the faith life and community of St. Joseph School, including daily prayer and school Masses.
• Supervise students during assigned duties, transitions, lunch, recess, and other school activities.
• Maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
• Communicate regularly with the school administration and grade‑level team to ensure continuity throughout the leave.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field preferred.
• Massachusetts teaching certification or eligibility for appropriate certification preferred.
• Elementary teaching experience preferred; third‑grade experience is a plus.
• Experience working with elementary-aged students.
• Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
