Job Description
Position Summary:
The Tripoli Community School District is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and service-oriented Long-Term Substitute School Nurse to provide comprehensive school health services and support the health, safety, and well-being of students throughout the school district.
The Long-Term Substitute School Nurse will provide nursing services during the assignment period and will work closely with students, families, administrators, teachers, special education staff, and community health-care providers. The position is responsible for providing appropriate health assessments, first aid, medication administration, care coordination, health education, documentation, and management of student health needs in accordance with applicable laws, professional standards, district policies, and individual health plans.
The successful candidate will demonstrate sound clinical judgment, strong communication skills, compassion, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and health needs. The nurse will serve as an important member of the school team and contribute to maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment.
The Long-Term Substitute School Nurse will work cooperatively with building administrators, teachers, counselors, special education personnel, families, health-care providers, and other district staff to ensure students' health needs are appropriately assessed, documented, communicated, and addressed.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or diploma in nursing required.
- Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
- Additional coursework or education related to school nursing, pediatrics, public health, OR community health is desirable.
- Current Iowa Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- Current CPR/AED and first aid certification preferred.
- Current mandatory reporter training as required by Iowa law and district policy.
- Must maintain all required professional licensure and certifications throughout employment.
Experience
- Previous nursing experience preferred.
- Pediatric, school nursing, community health, public health, or clinical experience is desirable.
- Experience caring for students with chronic health conditions, disabilities, or special health-care needs is beneficial.
- Experience with medication administration, health assessments, emergency response, and health documentation preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide professional nursing services to students in accordance with Iowa law, professional nursing standards, district policies, and established school health procedures.
- Assess students who present with illness, injury, or other health concerns.
- Provide appropriate first aid and nursing interventions.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies.
- Determine when students require additional evaluation, treatment, emergency services, or referral to a health-care provider.
- Monitor students with acute and chronic health conditions.
- Provide health support to students with diabetes, asthma, allergies, seizures, cardiac conditions, and other medical needs as appropriate.
- Assist students with health- related needs that affect their ability to participate safely in the educational environment.
- Provide health screenings as required or directed by the district.
- Follow up on health concerns identified through screenings, assessments, or communication with families and staff.
- Promote healthy behaviors and wellness among students.
- Provide health education and health-related information to students, staff, and families as appropriate.
- Administer medications in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorizations, Iowa law, and district policies.
- Maintain accurate medication administration records.
- Safely store and secure medications.
- Monitor medication supplies and expiration dates.
- Communicate medication-related concerns to parents/guardians, administrators, and health-care providers as appropriate.
- Follow established procedures for emergency medications and emergency action plans.
- Provide or coordinate medication-related training and delegation as authorized and appropriate.
- Review and maintain student individual health plans and emergency action plans.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and update individual health plans as appropriate and in collaboration with families, health-care providers, and the educational team.
- Participate in IEP, 504, and other student support meetings when health needs are relevant.
- Identify student health needs that may affect educational access or participation.
- Collaborate with special education personnel regarding students receiving special health services.
- Provide appropriate nursing assessment, intervention, monitoring, and documentation.
- Coordinate health services for students with complex or ongoing medical needs.
- Provide appropriate instruction, supervision, and delegation of health services consistent with Iowa requirements and the nurse's scope of practice.
- Communicate concerns regarding changes in student health status or health plans to appropriate personnel.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to nursing and school health services.
- Follow Iowa Board of Nursing requirements and professional standards.
- Follow district health, safety, emergency, medication, confidentiality, and student welfare policies.
- Practice within the scope of the nurse's professional license and training.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students, families, and staff.
- Promptly report suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with mandatory reporting requirements.
- Report safety concerns, significant health incidents, and other issues to the appropriate administrator.
- Maintain appropriate infection-control and safety practices.
- Properly handle, store, and dispose of medications, medical supplies, sharps, and other health-related materials.

Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, squat, reach, and perform repetitive physical movements.
- Move throughout the school building and grounds as necessary to provide student health services.
- Assist students with mobility and health-related needs as appropriate to the position.
- Lift, carry, move, and transport medical supplies and equipment. Respond quickly to emergencies and provide first aid and emergency care.
- Perform CPR and other emergency procedures when trained and required.
- Work in environments involving illness, bodily fluids, cleaning products, noise, and varying temperatures.
- Maintain appropriate infection-control practices and use personal protective equipment when necessary. Perform the physical duties necessary to provide safe and effective school nursing services.
Working Conditions
- Primarily a school-day position during the school year.
- Work is performed throughout school buildings, including the health office, classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, athletic areas, and other school facilities.
- Regular interaction with students of varying ages, staff, families, administrators, and community health-care providers.
- Exposure to students and individuals with illnesses, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and other health-related hazards.
- Occasional exposure to stressful or emergency situations requiring immediate professional response.
- May require occasional schedule adjustments for student health needs, meetings, field trips, school activities, or emergency situations.
- May require attendance at IEP, 504, health planning, or other student support meetings.
- Work schedule and daily responsibilities may vary based on student needs and district requirements.
Terms of Employment
The Long-Term Substitute School Nurse position is a temporary position for the duration of the assigned long-term substitute placement. Work schedule, salary, benefits, and other terms of employment are established by the Tripoli Community School District Board of Education and applicable district policies and agreements.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of required background checks, verification of Iowa RN licensure and applicable school nursing credentials, mandatory reporter requirements, and all required district trainings.
