Urbandale Community School District in Urbandale, Iowa is seeking a Long-Term Substitute ELL Associate Translator to support students and families by translating documents and interpreting conversations between English and learners' first languages, primarily Swahili and related languages.

The role requires collaborating with teachers, assisting with classrooms, and using Google tools. Starting date is immediate; salary is hourly and term is long-term substitute.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Paraeducator certificate preferred.
• Experience with translating and interpreting.
• Successful experience working with children preferred.
• Familiarity with Google Documents and Sheets preferred.
• Ability to work with English Learners and families.

Responsabilités

JOB TITLE - Substitute ELL Associate Translator - Swahili and other related languages

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION - AnELL Associate translates documents and interprets conversations from English to a student/family's first language and from a student/family's first language to English. Additional responsibilities include assisting teachers with working withELL families, instructional groups, clerical, supervision, and other supportive duties.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Translate materials to and from English.

• Interpret conversations to and from English.

• Knowledge of different cultures and ability to share that knowledge with students and staff.

• Interest and ability to work effectively with students who are learning English.
• Ability to work effectively with parents, students, and staff.
• Ability to become knowledgeable regarding classroom and building procedures and to apply that knowledge.
• Ability to follow directions and work without close supervision.
• Ability to maintain accurate student records as directed.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to assist students with academic tasks.
• Understanding of English language development.
• Ability to utilize Google Suite tools (docs, sheets, forms).

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Paraeducator certificate preferred.

Experience

• Experience with translating and interpreting.
• Successful experience working withchildren preferred.

Equipment

• Office equipment such as computers, two-way radios, multi-line phone system, cell phone, copier, and fax machines.
• Familiarity with Googledocuments and sheets preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ability to collaborate withELL and general education teachers.
• Ability to assist students with academic tasks.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Maintain a reliable attendance record.
• Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

• None

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Repetitious bending, lifting, and hand movement.
• Ability to work while standing, moving and/or walking.
• Drug, tobacco, and alcohol-free while working.
• Must be able to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Majority of work is performed in an office or school setting.
• Occasional meetings outside the school day.
• Occasional exposure to body fluids, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials and emergency situations.
