Job summary

The Saco School Department seeks a Long Term Substitute Grade 6 English Language Arts Teacher for a 12-week period from approximately November 1 through February 12. The teacher will join a four-person 6th grade team, delivering standards-aligned ELA instruction and collaborating on curriculum, planning, and assessment.

Responsibilities include developing lesson plans, assessing students, maintaining records, communicating with families, and supporting an inclusive classroom.

Long Term Substitute - Grade 6 English Language Arts Teacher

12 week position from approximately November 1st through February 12th

Position Purpose

This position is part of a collaborative four-person 6th grade teaching team, with each member specializing in a core subject area. The successful candidate will be solely responsible for delivering high-quality English Language Arts instruction, including planning and implementing engaging, standards-aligned lessons that develop students' reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills. While maintaining ownership of the ELA curriculum, this role involves close collaboration with team members. Responsibilities also include documenting teaching and student progress, activities, and outcomes; addressing the specific educational needs of individual students by creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment; and providing ongoing feedback to students, families, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. The position emphasizes flexibility, strong communication, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive classroom environment that supports the growth and success of all students.

• Essential Performance Responsibilities
• Develops and administers ELA middle school curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
• Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed.
• Instructs students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the Saco School System
• Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
• Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
• Coordinates with other middle school professional staff members, especially within grade level and specific subjects, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
• Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
• Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.

Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Education

• Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Experience

Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Compensation

Based on experience and Education, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Teacher - Salary Range - $46,119 - $83,057.
