Job summary

Carmel Hills Wellness & Rehabilitation in Independence, MO seeks an experienced cook to prepare and serve meals according to planned menus and standardized recipes, while ensuring food safety and regulatory compliance.

In this large-scale kitchen in a long-term care setting, you will monitor temperatures, assist with ordering and prep, follow cooking schedules, and work with supervision to maintain quality, consistency, and timely meal service.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Two years as cook in a large-scale cooking operation preferred.
• One year’s work experience in long term care preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares meal items according to planned menus and standardized recipes; refers to supervisor or dietitian for menu changes.
• Reviews menus, resident census information, production guides and pre-prep sheets to determine type and quantities of food.
• Prepares food according to safe handling guidelines and codes; assists with ordering, storage and preparation.
• Maintains standards for food preparation and quality; uses substitutions and follows recipes.
• Operates kitchen utensils and equipment; bakes, roasts, broils and steams foods as required.
• Prepares consistency modified and diet foods; assists with special function meals.
• Washes, peels, chops vegetables; slices meat and weighs for menu compliance and nutrition accuracy.
• Prepares and serves food attractively; tests palatability by tasting.
• Monitors and records food temperatures prior to meal service.
• Records menu changes with supervisor approval; uses substitutions when required.
• Uses proper hand washing, stores food correctly, and maintains clean work areas.
• Follows cleaning schedules and takes out trash as assigned; cleans equipment after use.
• Assumes responsibility for meeting meal schedules; reports to Cook in the absence of Dietary Manager.
