At this level, the incumbent develops foundational knowledge of Casella's services, customer requirements, subcontractor networks, operational systems, and business processes. The employee works under established procedures while building proficiency in customer account management, logistics coordination, data management, problem resolution, and business systems utilization.

Logistics Specialist II - Typically possesses 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in logistics, transportation, vendor management, customer support, operations analysis, or related functions. The incumbent demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of Casella's operational model and independently manages a larger portfolio of customer accounts, vendors, and service solutions. At this level, the employee resolves complex service issues, analyzes performance trends, supports process improvement initiatives, and serves as a resource to less experienced team members while maintaining high productivity and service quality standards.

Logistics Specialist Sr. - Typically possesses 6+ years of advanced logistics, customer relationship management, transportation, operational analytics, business systems, or vendor management experience. The incumbent serves as a recognized subject matter expert responsible for resolving highly complex operational challenges, managing strategic customer relationships, supporting significant process and system improvements, and influencing transportation, vendor, and service strategies. At this level, the employee provides technical leadership, mentors junior staff, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and applies advanced analytical, operational, and customer support system expertise to improve organizational performance and customer outcomes.

Nature & Scope

The Logistics Specialist reports directly to a Logistics Supervisor, who reports to the Manager of Logistics. The position does not typically maintain direct supervisory responsibility but may provide functional guidance, training, and technical support to less experienced Logistics Specialists and other operations team members.

The role works closely with Strategic Account Managers, Customer Care teams, Operations team, Transportation providers, Sustainability teams, Accounting, Sales, Business Systems team, and external vendors. Success requires effective collaboration across organizational boundaries while maintaining productive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

The Logistics Specialist operates within Casella's Logistics and Resource Solutions organization, which is responsible for coordinating transportation, disposal, recycling, and sustainability-related services across a diverse customer portfolio. The department functions in a dynamic, customer-driven environment where operational responsiveness, regulatory compliance, cost management, and service reliability are critical to business success.

The position supports a broad range of commercial, industrial, municipal, and strategic account customers whose service requirements frequently change due to business conditions, project demands, regulatory requirements, and operational constraints. The role must balance customer expectations with transportation capacity, facility availability, contractual obligations, and profitability considerations while maintaining Casella's commitment to environmental stewardship and customer service excellence.

This role serves as the central coordination point between customers, vendors, transportation providers, disposal facilities, recycling facilities, and internal operational groups. The position is responsible for translating customer requirements into executable service plans and ensuring those plans are carried out efficiently and effectively.

In addition to logistics coordination responsibilities, the incumbent performs analytical and customer support system functions that contribute to overall service quality and operational effectiveness. The position utilizes operational technologies, CRM platforms, dispatch systems, reporting tools, and financial systems to monitor performance, manage information, identify trends, and support strategic business decisions. The role combines logistics expertise, customer relationship management, operational analysis, and systems proficiency to support customer satisfaction and organizational performance.

The Logistics Specialist routinely encounters situations requiring independent analysis and judgment where variables may be incomplete, conflicting, or rapidly changing. Challenges frequently involve balancing customer expectations with transportation constraints, facility capacity limitations, subcontractor performance issues, regulatory requirements, and financial objectives.

The position must evaluate multiple service alternatives, identify root causes of operational issues, and develop practical solutions that address immediate concerns while minimizing business risk. Customer support system troubleshooting, data integrity issues, reporting discrepancies, and process inefficiencies may require the incumbent to investigate operational workflows across multiple systems and stakeholders. Problem solving generally involves established principles and procedures but regularly requires creativity, initiative, and informed judgment to achieve desired outcomes.

The Logistics Specialist operates with substantial independence within established company policies, contractual agreements, regulatory requirements, and departmental procedures. The incumbent is expected to make routine operational decisions regarding service scheduling, vendor utilization, issue resolution, customer communication, and process execution without direct supervision.

Work is evaluated primarily through customer satisfaction, service performance, operational efficiency, compliance, financial accuracy, and achievement of departmental objectives. Decisions involving significant financial impact, contractual modifications, major customer escalations, policy exceptions, or strategic business implications are typically reviewed with or approved by management. The position exercises discretion in determining appropriate solutions while remaining accountable for the quality and effectiveness of outcomes.

Internally, the Logistics Specialist maintains frequent interaction with Logistics leadership, Strategic Account Managers, Customer Care team, Sales teams, Operations team, Sustainability professionals, Accounting staff, Business Systems teams, and executive stakeholders requiring operational information and service updates. These interactions involve information sharing, collaborative problem solving, process improvement, and operational coordination.

Externally, the role maintains ongoing relationships with customers, transportation providers, subcontractors, disposal facilities, recycling facilities, environmental service vendors, and regulatory contacts as appropriate. These interactions require the ability to exchange information, negotiate service solutions, influence outcomes, resolve disputes, and build productive long-term partnerships that support Casella's business objectives and customer commitments.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have an associate's degree in business administration, logistics management, operations management, environmental studies, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Candidates should demonstrate strong relationship management, communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, customer relationship management systems, operational software platforms, and reporting tools. Experience supporting customers, coordinating multiple stakeholders, analyzing operational data, and working within service-oriented or environmentally focused organizations is strongly. A valid driver's license, ability to travel 10% of the time, and periodic overnight travel for regional meetings are required. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
