Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Shipping Supervisor to lead the Shipping and Warehouse Distribution teams in Glendale, AZ. You will supervise loading/unloading, coordinate with drivers, and ensure on-time, safe delivery of corrugated packaging products.

The role requires strong organizational and communication skills, a high school diploma (Bachelor's preferred), and experience with inventory control systems.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary education preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred from a 4-year college; or 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of computerized inventory control system.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English.
  • Good interpersonal & communication skills.
  • Highly organized, detail orientated and self-motivated (proactive attitude).
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment, learn quickly and follow established processed.
  • Good mathematical skills -- understand algebra and calculate figures and amounts.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and coordinates loading/unloading cargo and movement of packaging products.
  • Ensures orders are delivered to customers on time and in good condition.
  • Coordinates with Shipping and Warehouse staff and drivers to verify shipments meet dates.
  • Maintains safety standards and enforces safety policies with the team.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable state/federal regulations.
  • Inventory control accuracy and month-end inventory responsibilities.
  • Drives cost savings and continuous improvement within the Shipping department.
  • Talent development of direct reports and workforce planning.
  • Communicates KPI results and coordinates department meetings.

The opportunity:

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in loading and unloading cargo from conveyances such as trucks, and in moving and storing corrugated containers or packaging products. Is also responsible for Transportation to customers and sister plants. Assures that orders of product are delivered to the customer according to the required date and time. Makes sure that product is delivered in good condition according to customer's requirements and specifications.

How you will impact WestRock:
  • Visit the work area frequently to ensure compliance, and discusses safety issues with team. Explains to team that safety excellence is expected and is a requirement of employment. Encourages the team to report incidents, near-misses and unsafe conditions. SWR employees regardless of level, position or tenure are responsible for upholding the safety standards regulations and policies.
  • Follows all pertinent ISO 9001 procedures and assures that the activities in the Shipping Department adhere to OCCG's quality system
  • Coordinates with Shipping and Warehouse Distribution Center employees and drivers to verify shipment of goods are delivered on specified date
  • Communicates with Transportation Company to preclude delays in transit
  • Coordinates with outside carrier's deliveries that need to be shipped to customers per their requirements
  • Arranges distribution of materials to appropriate departments upon arrival to the Shipping Department
  • Inspects products for quality and quantity to ensure adherence to specifications
  • Responsible for the operation of company's private fleet of vehicles, including maintenance
  • Responsible for compliance with State/ Federal Regulations including but not limited to: DOT, CHP, CA Pull Notice
  • Ensure compliance with Union Collective Bargaining Agreement within supervised environment
  • Responsible for Talent Development of direct reports
  • Responsible for Workforce Planning within Shipping and Warehouse Distribution
  • Understand Key Performance Indicators within the Shipping and Warehouse Distribution Center
  • Schedule meetings with department to address areas of concern
  • Drive Continuous Improvement throughout area of Supervision
  • Responsible for Inventory Control accuracy in Shipping and Warehouse Distribution Center
  • Responsible for Month End inventory in Shipping and Warehouse Distribution Center
  • Drives Cost Savings and Expense Reduction Measures throughout area of responsibility
  • Works with Safety Manager to ensure safety rules are enforced
  • All other duties as assigned
What you need to succeed:
  • High school diploma or GED required; Post-secondary education preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred from a 4-year college; or 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of computerized inventory control system
  • Must be able to read, write and speak in English
  • Good interpersonal & communication skills
  • Highly organized, detail orientated and self-motivated individual (proactive attitude)
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment, learn quickly and follow established processed
  • Good mathematical skills -- Ability to understand basic algebra, able to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, volume etc. (add and subtract numbers, multiply and divide by 10's and 100's...)
