Job summary

Savage LOCOMOTIVE OPERATOR in Owensville, IN conducts daily railcar movements and unloads materials within the facility, following safety procedures and railroad rules. You will coordinate with crew members and railroad personnel to ensure timely operations while maintaining compliant documentation and safety practices.

Night shift opportunities with 7 days on, 7 days off (6pm to 6am). Requires 1+ year locomotive experience, FRA and GCOR certification preferable, and a commitment to reliable

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year or more engineer experience, preferably Road Power.
  • Knowledge of GCOR rules and FRA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Daily railcar movement and unloading within the facility.
  • Inservice railcar repair and maintenance.
  • Communicate with train crews and railroad personnel by radio or signals.
  • Prepare paperwork for railcar movements and comply with rail rules.
  • Willing to training and perform assigned tasks as needed.

Savage is hiring a Locomotive Operator/ Carman to join our team and conduct railcar movements throughout our customers facility in Owensville, IN.

  • Night Shift
  • Schedule 7 on 7 off; 6pm to 6 am

What You Need To Be Successful In This Role
  • Locomotive Operator is responsible for the daily railcar movement and unloading of material within the facility safely and timely
  • Inservice railcar repair and maintenance
  • Communicate with other train crew members, the railroad employees by radio, signals or by other means to give and receive train operations information and aid in the movement and operation of trains
  • Prepare necessary paperwork associated with the movement of the railcars
  • Understand and adhere to rail rules and regulations as prescribed by Savage, our customer, and the Railroad
  • A willingness to complete any assigned task(s) as long as they have been properly trained
  • Will have daily contact with fellow team members and their immediate supervisor and/or manager
  • Will have daily contact with customers, Class 1 railroad personnel, and members of the regional and/or executive management team
Key strengths of the successful locomotive operator
  • Experienced locomotive engineer---have been previously FRA certified and GCOR rules certified
  • Committed to show up on time on every scheduled work day
  • Understands the importance of good communication with the customer and other Savage employees
  • Experienced locomotive engineer---have been previously FRA certified and GCOR rules certified
  • Understands the importance of customer service and able to professionally deliver service to the customer
  • Strong communication and listening skills including the ability to read, write and understand
Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1 year or more of engineer experience, preferably "Road Power", knowledge of distributed power and Multiple Units operations as well as "slow speed"
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to work 7 days on 7 days off
  • Night shift position available
  • Willing to receive switchmen, Locomotive and Distributive power training & general safety training
  • Willing to work with dry bulk materials
  • Must be able to climb on and off railcars and locomotives
  • Must be willing to work 12-hour shifts
  • Must be able to pass the plant's site requirement test
