Job summary

Savage Services in the United States is seeking a Railroad Switchman to spot cars, classify trains, and coordinate with Class I railroads on a daily basis.

You will inspect cars, assist in multiple facility functions, and train to operate a locomotive. The role emphasizes safety and teamwork within a 5S environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance.
  • Willingness to complete OSHA, HazMat and FRA training.
  • Ability to travel to other sites as needed.
  • Willingness to wear PPE.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.
  • Industrial work experience preferred.
  • Must be able to read/write English.
  • Clear drug/alcohol test and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with spotting cars on the correct track; move empty cars and build the outbound train.
  • Classify inbound trains.
  • Interact with Class I railroad.
  • Daily spot and pull with site partners.
  • Visually inspect rail cars and perform air brakes inspections.
  • Cross-train and assist in different facility functions.
  • Operate a locomotive; training and certification provided.
  • Participate in Savage safety program/SHAPS.

What you will be doing as a Railroad Switchman
  • Assist with spotting cars on the correct track; move empty cars and build the outbound train

Requirements of a successful Rail Switchman
  • A high school diploma, or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance
  • Ability to attend and pass all training associated with job related coursework. This includes but is not limited to: OSHA, HazMat and FRA related courses.
  • Ability to travel to other sites to assist in switching and training requirements
  • Willingness to wear required PPE
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends
  • Work experience in an industrial environment
  • Ability to read, write and understand English
  • Clear drug / alcohol test / criminal background check
Here are some of the physical requirements of this role
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weatherconditions
  • Comfortable with heights
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time
