Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites applicants to join a locomotive diesel mechanic trainee program designed to prepare individuals for hands-on maintenance across diesel-electric locomotives. The role blends classroom instruction with field training in shops and yards, emphasizing safety and operational reliability.

The program includes graded field experiences, lodging and travel reimbursement per union agreement, and a path to journeyman status as you gain experience and pass required assessments.

Qualifications

• Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn locomotive systems.
• Strong communication skills for teamwork and safety.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily and periodic inspections, servicing, and maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives.
• Fuel locomotives and check/change oil and fluid levels.
• Replace filters for engine air, air compressor, fuel, and lube oil.
• Replace and maintain engine components, traction motors, generators, air compressors, wheels, and truck components.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make required repairs.
• Disassembly, repair, replacement, rebuild, reassembly, installation, adjustment, alignment, and lubrication activities on mechanical equipment.
• Ensure compliance with all railroad safety rules and regulations.
• Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries.
• Complete annual safety training and pass safety rules examinations.
