Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. seeks a motivated Locomotive Diesel Mechanic Trainee to train in locomotive mechanical maintenance through classroom and on-the-job instruction. The role involves inspecting, servicing, and repairing diesel‑electric locomotives to keep the network reliable.

Training includes safety orientation, crafts training, and hands-on work in shops and yards. The position requires shift work, travel for training, and union membership within 60 days.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Outdoor work in all weather and heavy physical labor.
• Must pass post-offer medical examination including a drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily and periodic inspections, servicing, and maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives.
• Fuel locomotives and check/change oil and fluid levels.
• Replace filters for engine air, air compressor, fuel, and lube oil.
• Replace and maintain engine components, traction motors, generators, air compressors, wheels, and truck components.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and perform repairs.
• Disassemble, repair, replace, rebuild, reassemble, install, adjust, align, and lubricate mechanical equipment.
• Ensure compliance with railroad safety rules and regulations.
• Work safely to prevent accidents and injuries.
• Wear required protective equipment (hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses).
• Complete annual safety training and pass safety rules examinations.
• Complete required reports and maintain records using computer systems.
