Job summary

The Iowa Department of Public Defense at Camp Dodge is seeking a skilled Locksmith to install, repair, and rebuild locks and security devices, ensuring building and asset security. Position requires hands-on work with mechanical and electronic systems.

Responsibilities include key creation, lock maintenance, access control installation, and incidentally supporting security cameras and alarms. Valid driver’s license may be required; background check & confidentiality agreement may apply.

Qualifications

• Three years of experience in skilled locksmithing work or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license may be required.
• Background check and confidentiality agreement may be required.

Responsibilities

• Disassemble malfunctioning locks and rebuild or replace worn components using hand and power tools.
• Clean and lubricate locking mechanisms to extend life and ensure proper operation.
• Create new or duplicate keys using files or a cutting machine and key codes.
• Pick locks to access secured areas when keys are unavailable.
• Change safe and lock combinations upon request to improve security.
• Maintain strict security records of keys, combinations, and inventory.
• Install and troubleshoot electronic lock systems and card access readers; pull wires and install cabling.
• Troubleshoot cameras, alarm systems, and security devices and upload security programs.

Do you have a knack for picking locks and cutting keys? Knowledgeable about security systems? The Iowa Department of Public Defense at Camp Dodge is looking to fill a Locksmith position to assist the state in performing work in the installation, repair, and rebuilding of locks, security devices, and other hardware to ensure the security of buildings and property.

What You’ll Do

• Disassembles malfunctioning locks to replace or rebuild worn or broken mechanisms by using a variety of hand and power tools.
• Cleans and lubricates locking mechanisms to insure proper, consistent operation and to extend the life expectancy of the mechanism by using graphite, oil, or other acceptable materials.
• Makes new or duplicate keys to replace lost or broken keys by utilizing a variety of hand files or a key cutting machine and using the tracing method or key code books.
• Picks locks to gain access to secured areas when the key has been lost or the combination has been forgotten by using various specialized lock picking tools and techniques.
• Changes safe and lock combinations to provide additional security upon agency request by manipulating pin and disc arrangements.
• Maintains, in strict security, routine records of keys issued, combinations and safe locks, equipment and supply inventory, and lock placements.
• Installs control points or troubleshoots issues involving electronic lock systems and installs card access reader systems. Pulls wire, installs cable raceway system, motion detectors, status switches, locks, controllers, and power supplies.
• Troubleshoots security cameras, speaker systems, parking lot gates, and motion detectors. Programs and uploads security programs to access hardware.
• Maintains or assists in the maintenance of electronic security programs.

Location and hours

Camp Dodge, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday, hours may vary with work assignments/and some weekend assignments to provide additional base support.

Ability to read and write and three years of experience in skilled locksmithing work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the successful completion of a course in locksmithing principles for one year of the required experience.

Designated positions may require possession of a valid Iowa driver's license.
