Job summary

Tommy’s Express is seeking a Delivery Driver to safely operate a Class B straight truck and deliver equipment, parts, and detergents within a 150 air-mile radius of our Holland, MI headquarters. This safety-sensitive role requires hazmat endorsements and strict adherence to DOT/FMCSA regulations as you represent our growing nationwide brand.

You will load/unload, secure freight, perform pre/post trips, and ensure accurate delivery documentation while providing excellent customer service.

Qualifications

  • CDL Class B with HazMat and Tank endorsements required.
  • Must pass DOT/FMCSA testing and maintain Clearinghouse clearance.
  • Minimum 21 years old with valid DOT Medical Certificate.
  • Strong knowledge of FMCSA regulations and load securement.
  • Two+ years driving experience preferred; hazardous materials transport a plus.
  • Ability to read/write/speak English and communicate with customers.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a Class B truck to deliver products to customers within route.

Delivery Driver

Tommy’s is looking for a Delivery Driver to safely operate a Class B straight truck and make regular deliveries of equipment, parts, and detergents to customers throughout the local area, operating within a 150 air-mile radius of our headquarters. This is a safety-sensitive role responsible for the safe, timely, and fully compliant transport of company products — including hazardous materials — while representing Tommy’s with professionalism at every stop.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Safely operate a Class B straight truck to deliver product, parts, and detergents to customers.
  • Load, secure, and unload freight — including palletized product, drums, and detergent totes — using proper material-handling equipment and load-securement practices.
  • Transport hazardous materials (including detergents and chemicals) in full compliance with the U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and prepare Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports
  • Verify shipping papers, marking, labeling, placarding, and emergency response information for all hazardous materials shipments prior to transport.
  • Operate within Federal Hours-of-Service limits and maintain accurate daily time records supporting the 150 air-mile short-haul exception.
  • Plan and follow efficient delivery routes; communicate delivery status, delays, and exceptions to the Lead Logistics Specialist.
  • Safely handle, segregate, and secure hazardous and non-hazardous materials during loading, transport, and unloading.
  • Perform RMA process with delivery sites as necessary, load return equipment, secure for transport, and document condition
  • Maintain the cleanliness, fuel, fluid levels, and general upkeep of the assigned vehicle; promptly report defects, accidents, and incidents.
  • Provide excellent customer service at each delivery, obtaining proof of delivery and resolving discrepancies professionally.
  • Respond appropriately to spills, releases, or emergencies and report hazardous materials incidents as required.
  • Other duties as assigned; duties and responsibilities may change at any time with or without notice.
Position Qualifications & Candidate Attributes:
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B (Class A also acceptable), issued by the driver’s state of residence.
  • Current Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement and Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement — or the combined Hazardous Materials/Tank (X) endorsement — including a valid TSA Security Threat Assessment.
  • Minimum 21 years of age, as required for interstate operation of a commercial motor vehicle and for a hazardous materials endorsement.
  • Valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate; must be physically qualified to drive under and examined by a provider listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.
  • Able to satisfy all Driver Qualification File requirements, including a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), Safety Performance History, road test, and annual review of driving record.
  • Must pass and remain compliant with DOT/FMCSA controlled-substances and alcohol testing and be registered and queried in the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Completion of, or ability to complete, hazardous materials employee training within 90 days of hire, with recurrent training at least once every three years.
  • Ability to read, speak, and understand English sufficiently to converse with the public, understand traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports and records.
  • Two or more years of commercial driving experience preferred; experience transporting hazardous materials and/or operating tank vehicles strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and the Hazardous Materials Regulations.
  • Clean driving record with no disqualifying offenses under 49 CFR Part 383, Subpart D.
  • Comfortable using handheld devices, routing software, and standard delivery documentation.
  • Process-oriented and strong collaborator with ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and across various departments

DOT & FMCSA Regulatory Requirements:

This position is a safety-sensitive function subject to the regulations of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The Delivery Driver must operate in continuous compliance with all applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Hazardous Materials Regulations, including but not limited to the following:

  • Maintain a valid Class B (or Class A) CDL with Hazardous Materials (H) and Tank Vehicle (N) endorsements.
  • Meet the physical qualification standards and hold a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate; be at least 21 years of age; and meet the English-language proficiency requirement.
  • Participate in the DOT drug and alcohol testing program (pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing) and comply with FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse requirements.
  • Observe the 11-hour driving limit, the 14-hour on-duty window, required rest breaks, and the 60/70-hour on-duty limits.
  • Operate within a 150 air-mile radius of the normal work reporting location, return to and be released from that location within 14 consecutive hours, and receive at least 10 consecutive hours off duty between shifts. When these conditions are met, the driver is relieved of the Record of Duty Status (RODS) and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) requirements, provided the company maintains accurate time records (start time, end time, and total on-duty hours) for at least six months.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections, prepare post-trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports, and notify appropriate management of any vehicle found in an out-of-service condition from operation.
  • Comply with shipping documentation, marking, labeling, and placarding, emergency response information, and loading, unloading, and segregation requirements.
  • Complete general awareness/familiarization, function-specific, safety, and security awareness training (and in-depth security training where applicable) within 90 days of hire, with recurrent training at least once every three years.
  • Comply with the company’s hazardous materials security plan and associated security training where applicable to the materials transported.
  • Immediately report accidents, spills, and hazardous materials incidents in accordance with company policy and Federal requirements.
  • Operate only vehicles that display the carrier’s legal name and USDOT number as required.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:

This position operates in a combination of a warehouse/dock environment and on public roadways. The Delivery Driver spends the majority of each shift operating a commercial motor vehicle and making deliveries at customer locations, working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Operating hours are generally Monday through Friday, with start and end times determined by delivery routes and schedules. This role routinely operates a Class B straight truck along with forklifts, pallet jacks, hand trucks, and load-securement equipment.

To successfully perform the essential functions of this job, team member must be able to:

  • Work and commute in all weather conditions
  • Safely operate a commercial motor vehicle for extended periods, including repeatedly entering and exiting the cab throughout the shift
  • Frequently stand, walk, climb, and move about at the warehouse, loading dock, and customer delivery sites
  • Repeatedly lift, carry, push, pull, and maneuver up to 100 pounds, and occasionally more with the assistance of equipment or another team member
  • Load, unload, and secure freight, including palletized product, drums, and detergent totes
  • Able to walk, bend, twist, turn, stoop, climb steps, reach with hands, and use hands to fingers
  • Tolerate vibration and louder-than-normal noise levels associated with vehicle operation and warehouse activity
