Job Summary

The Loan Portfolio Manager II is responsible for providing independent portfolio management, credit administration, and underwriting support for commercial lending relationships within assigned markets. This position partners closely with lending officers and market leadership to support portfolio quality, credit administration, customer service, annual reviews, covenant monitoring, and the credit approval process.

The Loan Portfolio Manager II serves as a key resource throughout the commercial lending and portfolio management process, coordinating with Loan Assistants, lenders, Credit Administration, and Loan Operations to facilitate timely and accurate credit administration and portfolio support activities.

This position supports NBT’s community banking philosophy through participation in customer relationship-building activities and community engagement opportunities within the markets served.

Essential Functions - Portfolio Management
  • Provide portfolio management and credit administration support for commercial lending relationships within assigned markets.
  • Partner with lending officers and market leadership to monitor portfolio performance, identify developing credit concerns, and maintain portfolio quality.
  • Complete annual reviews, renewals, modifications, and portfolio maintenance activities.
  • Ensure timely collection and review of required borrower financial reporting.
  • Monitor covenant compliance, document exceptions, and assist with timely resolution.
  • Review collateral inspections, evaluations, appraisals, environmental reports, and other due diligence requirements.
  • Manage maturing loans to ensure timely renewal, modification, or payoff.
  • Assist with criticized, classified, and watch list relationships.
  • Coordinate with lending officers to maintain portfolio quality and compliance.
Credit Analysis and Underwriting Support
  • Analyze commercial financial statements, tax returns, balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow analyses.
  • Evaluate guarantor strength, liquidity, leverage, and global cash flow.
  • Review loan structure, collateral position, covenant requirements, and risk factors.
  • Recommend risk ratings and identify emerging credit concerns.
  • Assist lenders in structuring commercial real estate, owner-occupied real estate, construction, equipment, and line-of-credit facilities.
  • Participate in loan committee presentations and approval discussions as requested.
  • Maintain knowledge of Bank policy, regulatory requirements, and sound lending practices.
Credit Approval and Portfolio Support
  • Support commercial lending activities throughout the credit approval and portfolio management process.
  • Assist lending officers with collection, organization, and review of information necessary for credit analysis and approval.
  • Coordinate with Loan Assistants, Credit Administration, Loan Operations, and other departments to facilitate timely progression of assigned credit requests.
  • Prepare credit memorandums, annual reviews, renewal requests, modifications, and supporting approval documentation.
  • Maintain organized credit files and supporting due diligence materials.
  • Assist in resolving underwriting, collateral, appraisal, environmental, title, survey, and documentation issues.
  • Support lenders during loan committee preparation and approval processes.
  • Assist with transitioning approved loans into ongoing portfolio management and monitoring activities.
Customer Relationship Support
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned portfolio relationships regarding financial reporting, annual reviews, covenant compliance, and portfolio maintenance.
  • Maintain strong customer relationships through proactive communication and responsiveness.
  • Assist lending officers in providing exceptional customer service and relationship retention.
  • Participate in customer meetings when requested.
  • Support timely and accurate resolution of customer requests and inquiries.
Leadership and Team Support
  • Provide workflow coordination and guidance for Loan Assistants supporting assigned lending relationships.
  • Coordinate collection of financial information, due diligence items, and loan documentation necessary for underwriting and portfolio management activities.
  • Assist in prioritizing annual reviews, renewals, new loan requests, and portfolio maintenance activities.
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices with Loan Assistants, Portfolio Manager I employees, and lending staff.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less experienced personnel.
  • Support workflow coordination, process improvement initiatives, reporting, special projects, and market initiatives as assigned.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum five (5) years of commercial banking experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in commercial credit analysis, underwriting, portfolio management, or related lending functions.
  • Experience with commercial real estate, construction lending, equipment finance, lines of credit, and owner-occupied commercial lending.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage commercial credit relationships and annual review responsibilities.
