Job summary

County of Culpeper, VA is seeking a dedicated professional to supervise offenders assigned to roadside litter cleanup programs. You will coordinate with Probation Officers, interact with community members, and work with the Virginia Department of Transportation to select pickup sites.

The role requires experience in criminal justice or case management, plus training in Motivational Interviewing. You will document hours, monitor progress, and maintain records with accuracy.

Qualifications

• Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by coursework in criminal justice, social work, or related field; 1–2 years of criminal justice/case management duties.
• Must obtain a satisfactory criminal history background check.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.
• Must be trained in Motivational Interviewing (MI) and participate in Learning Teams.

Responsibilities

• Works with Local Probation Officers, community members, and VDOT to identify litter pickup sites.
• Reproduces maps with mileage for offenders to identify their assigned area and calculates credit per area.
• Assigns litter pickup sites to offenders and provides information to Local Probation Officers.
• Provides direct supervision of offenders performing litter pickup; may transport offenders to sites.
• Inspects litter pickup sites to ensure cleanup is completed.
• Coordinates cleanup with VDOT to ensure removal of collected litter.
• Reports compliance and provides written hours credited and work performed to the Local Probation Officer.
• Maintains statistical data on participants, trash collected, and miles cleaned.

Job description

Performs professional work involving roadside litter pickup by local offenders, placed on probation by the courts and ordered to complete community service hours.

1. Works with the Local Probation Officers of Criminal Justice Services, local community members, and the Virginia Department of Transportation in identifying roadside litter pickup sites.
2. Reproduces maps with mileage for offenders to use identifying their area assisgned. Calculates how much credit each offender will receive per assigned pick up area.
3. Assigns litter pickup sites to offenders. Provides information to the Local Probation Officers assigned to the case.
4. Provides direct supervision of offenders performing litter pickup as required. May also require transporting offenders to assigned sites.
5. Inspects litter pickup sites. Inspects each litter pickup site by physically inspecting site to ensure site was cleaned properly.
6. Coordinates cleanup effort with the Department of Transportation; notifies VDOT in order to ensure removal of collected litter.
7. Reports compliance to the Local Probation Officer assigned. Provides written report to the Local Probation Officer assigned indicating amount of hours credited and day work performed.
8. Maintains statistical data. Maintains all statistical data to include, but not limited to, number of offenders participating in the program, amount of trash collected, and number of miles cleaned.

• Knowledge of all federal, state and local laws pertaining to criminal justice services/position.
• Skilled in monitoring offenders assigned to complete community service hours.
• Ability to effectively plan and manage assigned caseload.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Tasks may risk exposure to violence. Tasks risk exposure to stressful situations and high-risk individuals. Must able to lift 12-20 pounds. Very moderate physical work, typically involving stooping, kneeling, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects, etc. Requires the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, and to see.
