Job summary

Shelter Insurance Companies is seeking a Litigation Counsel in Iowa to lead complex claims litigation strategy across designated states. You will supervise teams, coordinate with external attorneys, and ensure compliance with state laws and policy terms. A law degree and relevant claims experience are required.

Qualifications

• Law degree and professional mastery of litigation, claims procedures, and insurance law.
• 1-3 years trial or legal claims experience; 6-12 months on-the-job training to learn contracts and jurisdictions.
• Ability to handle complex, high-exposure claims and manage outside counsel.

Responsibilities

• Manage and direct claims litigation activities and case strategy for designated Shelter states.
• Direct Managers and Supervisors in claims handling, investigation, and communication on complex claims.
• Supervise outside attorneys; hire, fire, monitor, and evaluate performance.
• Direct and train claims-handling activities as impacted by state law for branches and units.
• Establish and direct overall claims-handling protocol; research law and explain impact on claims handling.
• Counsel Shelter departments on legal issues and train for schools, eLearning, and Branches.

Litigation Counsel

Starting Salary: $90,002 - $115,203

Shelter maintains broad salary ranges for its roles in order to account for variations in geographic location, education, training, skills, relevant work experience, business needs and market demands. Please remember that this range is the starting base pay only and does not consider other components that make up the total rewards package for the position.

What You Will Be Doing:

Manage and direct claims litigation activities and case strategy for designated Shelter states; direct Managers and Supervisors in claims handling, investigation, and communication on complex, high-exposure, and other critical branch claims; Manage, supervise, hire, fire, monitor, and evaluate performance of outside attorneys; Direct and train claims-handling activities as impacted by state law for assigned Shelter branches and units; Establish, train, and direct overall claims-handling protocol consistent with state law; Research law to explain impact on claims handling, claims procedures, other Shelter departments, and policy changes proposals; counsels other Shelter departments' personnel about various claims, coverage, and legal issues; direct and prepare appropriate training for schools, eLearning, and Branches.

• Ability to develop critical relationships with, and respect from, a diverse group including defense attorneys, adjusters, claimants and their attorneys, judges, and Shelter management and other departments.
• Law degree and professional mastery and thorough knowledge of litigation, claims-litigation precedents, legal decisions, insurance law, and policy terms.
• 1-3 years trial or legal claims experience, and 6-12 months on the job training to learn insurance contracts, claims procedures and policies, jurisdictions and procedures of various courts, and to develop relationships with branches, area attorneys, and other departments.
• Ability to perform essential functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
