Job description

Insurance Defense Attorney - Hanover Staff Counsel - Our staff counsel team is currently seeking a Sr. Trial Attorney for its Wisconsin office. Dual license with Illinois is preferred. This is a remote/full-time/exempt role.

Position Summary:

Investigates and manages cases of low, moderate and complex exposure in civil litigation from the inception of the lawsuit until conclusion through dismissal, settlement or trial. Responsible for handling cases in auto negligence, general liability, premises liability, dog bite, homeowners' claims and coverage matters. Works with a team of attorneys and adjusters to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

  1. Handle a moderate caseload consisting of low to complex exposure auto negligence, general liability, premises liability, dog bite, homeowners' claims and coverage matters.
  2. Meet with claims professionals to resolve cases in the most cost-effective manner.
  3. Answer and develop theories and affirmative defenses to incoming lawsuits.
  4. Engage in routine motion practice, discovery and research.
  5. Handle trials and arbitrations.
  6. Periodically present to claims partners on new developments in the law.

WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:

  1. Minimum 10 - 12 years litigation experience; first chair trial experience preferred.
  2. Must have a valid driver's license, an acceptable MVR and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
  3. Admitted to the bar and must be licensed to practice law in the jurisdictions where assigned.
  4. Advocacy: Has the knowledge and ability to assist, defend or plead for another.
  5. Communication: Has knowledge and ability to deliberately and precisely exchange thoughts and opinions with one or more persons and to effectively translate legal language and ideas into layman's terms.
  6. Organization Skills: Must have the ability to categorize and prioritize work and information to effectively maximize productivity.

Desired skills and experience:

  1. Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and daily management of e-mail and calendar.
  2. Able to work in a team environment with other attorneys, adjusters and other claims professionals and support staff.
  3. Investigative Skills: Ability to follow up step by step on inquiry or observation; to trace or track, search or examine with care and accuracy.
  4. Legal Research: Ability to locate cases, treaties, codified laws and statutes aimed at the discovery and interpretation of law and to draw a reasonable and accurate conclusion or render an opinion.
  5. Courtroom Skills: Appropriate courtroom behavior, attire and decorum and familiarity with the rules and regulations that govern proceedings and conduct in courts of law or other legal forums and tribunals.

Physical demands & work environment:

  1. Ability to use a personal computer and other standard office equipment.
  2. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  3. Ability to travel as necessary.
  4. Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
