Job summary

The City of New York, Office of the Comptroller, Bureau of Law and Adjustment (BLA), seeks an Agency Attorney to join a team that settles pre-litigation claims and supervises settlements in litigation. Reporting to senior attorneys and directors, you will evaluate claims, negotiate settlements, and coordinate with the Law Department and agencies.

The ideal candidate is admitted to the New York State Bar, with 1 year of relevant legal experience or 6 months as an Agency Attorney Intern, and

Qualifications

• Admitted to the New York State Bar in good standing.
• One year of satisfactory United States legal experience after admission to any state bar; or six months as Agency Attorney Intern (30086).

Responsibilities

• Evaluate, negotiate, and resolve personal injury, civil rights/police, labor and employment, and other tort claims before litigation.
• Approve, deny, or act on Law Department requests for settlement authority.
• Prepare memoranda evaluating liability, risk, and damages to request settlement authority.
• Participate in settlement negotiations in state and federal courts and in out-of-court discussions with counsel.
• Attend 50-h hearings on high-profile, media-sensitive matters as needed.
• Assist Senior Attorneys on intergovernmental risk management initiatives involving confidential matters.
