The firm’s practice includes health care litigation; licensure and disciplinary matters; medical staff and privileging disputes; Stark Law and Anti‑Kickback Statute compliance; False Claims Act and other government enforcement matters; payer disputes; Medicare and Medicaid appeals; billing and reimbursement issues; and health care transactions.

Position

The Health Law Partners seeks an experienced Litigation Attorney to join its growing national practice. This is a full-time position may be remote, with meaningful integration into a collaborative team based in Detroit and New York. We welcome candidates with experience in any complex litigation practice.

This is not a narrow, single-jurisdiction litigation role. The attorney will handle sophisticated health care disputes and investigations involving federal law and matters arising in multiple state forums. The right candidate is a strong, practical litigator who can quickly learn a new jurisdiction, statutory framework, regulatory scheme, or client business model; identify what controls; and deliver sound, well-supported work without requiring every assignment to fit a familiar template.

The attorney must be licensed and in good standing in Michigan or New York. Experience in additional jurisdictions is welcome. Where appropriate, work in other states will be performed in coordination with supervising attorneys, local counsel, and applicable admission rules.

Responsibilities

• Handle and support complex health care litigation in federal and state courts, administrative forums, arbitrations, and pre-litigation disputes.
• Independently manage litigation matters from early case assessment through dispositive motion practice, discovery, depositions, hearings, settlement, and trial preparation.
• Draft clear, persuasive, and well-researched pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, position letters, and client communications.
• Conduct legal research across federal and state statutes, regulations, procedural rules, and evolving health care authorities.
• Take and defend depositions; prepare fact and expert witnesses; and participate in hearings, mediations, arbitrations, and trials as experience and the needs of the matter warrant.
• Develop litigation strategy with partners and clients, including early risk assessment, factual investigation, preservation issues, and practical business recommendations.
• Work effectively with local counsel and adapt quickly to jurisdiction‑specific procedural and substantive requirements.
• Advise health care clients on disputes involving reimbursement, billing, licensure, professional relationships, compliance, government investigations, payer issues, and related operational risk.
• Build trusted client relationships through responsive communication, sound judgment, ownership of assignments, and consistently excellent work product.
• Mentor junior attorneys and staff as appropriate and contribute to the continued growth of the firm’s litigation practice.

Required Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• Active license and good standing with the Michigan Bar or New York Bar.
• At least 3–5 years of substantive federal and state litigation experience.
• Demonstrated experience handling meaningful portions of litigation matters, including motion practice, discovery, depositions, hearings, and case strategy.
• Strong legal research, writing, oral advocacy, analytical, and factual‑investigation skills.
• Ability to move comfortably between federal litigation, state‑court practice, administrative proceedings, and client counseling.
• Intellectual flexibility and curiosity: the ability to quickly understand unfamiliar state‑law issues, procedural rules, regulatory frameworks, and health care business models.
• Strong project‑management skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize competing deadlines independently.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a client‑service mindset.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a remote, deadline‑driven environment.
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in health law, health care litigation, payer disputes, reimbursement matters, government investigations, professional licensing, or physician‑practice disputes.
• Experience defending or investigating False Claims Act, fraud‑and‑abuse, billing, reimbursement, or government‑enforcement matters.
• Experience representing health care providers, physician groups, health systems, post‑acute providers, suppliers, or health care management companies.
• Trial, arbitration, administrative‑hearing, or appellate experience.
• eDiscovery experience.
• Admission in both Michigan and New York, or additional state‑bar admissions.
