Literacy Teacher GENERAL INFORMATION Title: Literacy Teacher Department: Bedford Hills Elementary School Salary Grade: Teacher Pay Schedule
FLSA Status: Exempt Site/Location: Bedford Hills Elementary School Reports to: Building Administrator Date: 07/23/2026 POSITION SUMMARY The Reading Specialist Teacher provides instructional leadership and targeted support to strengthen literacy achievement for all students. This position works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, interventionists, and families to implement comprehensive evidence-based reading instruction, analyze student literacy data, provide intervention support, and promote effective practices aligned with the science of reading. The Reading Specialist supports classroom teachers through coaching, modeling, collaborative planning, and professional learning to ensure high-quality literacy instruction across grade levels. This role also assists with identifying student reading needs, monitoring progress, coordinating interventions, and ensuring that reading supports are responsive, equitable, and aligned with division and school improvement goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Works in cooperation with the individual school staff to develop a comprehensive school plan for the teaching of reading.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to the school staff in matters related to reading instruction to include conducting professional development and implementing division initiatives.
  • Serves as a model for instructional and professional excellence.
  • Provides intervention services to students that are not achieving success through regular classroom instruction.
  • Provides individualized instruction to children that focus on specific skill deficits.
  • Implements frequent progress monitoring to determine the effectiveness of intervention services.
  • Provides diagnostic services for students who have demonstrated a lack of progress with conventional intervention strategies and programs.
  • Provides individualized remediation/tutorial services based upon the diagnostic assessment.
