Job summary

University of Indianapolis invites applications for the Literacy Specialist role aligning with CELL’s science of reading and Indiana priorities for literacy across K12 and higher education partners. The position emphasizes connecting research to practice and coordinating professional development for diverse audiences.

Travel within Indiana is required to visit schools for program evaluation and to collaborate with state partners, higher education institutions, and school districts.

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years experience as a classroom teacher delivering reading instruction.
Practical and theoretical understanding of science of reading research as it relates to school-based reading programs.
Reading specialist credential preferred but not required.
Graduate degree in education, reading/literacy, cognitive/learning sciences, or related fields strongly preferred.
Experience as a teacher preparation instructor, literacy coach, or professional development leader preferred.
Experience as a school administrator preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

Support the efforts of schools, higher education partners, and State government related to improving reading proficiency for all students.
Support the leadership and execution of CELL’s literacy programs.
Develop and lead professional development on literacy topics focused on the science of reading.
Establish new partnerships and continue existing partnerships.
Co-develop partnership scopes of work and meet on-time deliverables.

Job Description

The Literacy Specialist offers technical leadership and support fora range of initiatives pertaining to literacy programming inalignment with CELL’s science of reading and Indiana’s prioritiesfor literacy with K12 schools, teachers, and higher educationinstitutions. The Literacy Specialist has specific skills andknowledge relative to the science of reading, including the abilityto connect research to practice when working withstakeholders.

REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum 5 years experience as a classroom teacher, deliveringreading instruction.
Possess a practical and theoretical understanding of thescience of reading research as it relates to school-based readingprograms.
Licenses/Certifications/Credentials: reading specialist orother literacy credential preferred, but not required.
A graduate degree in education, reading/literacy,cognitive/learning sciences, or related fields is stronglypreferred.
Experience as a teacher preparation instructor, a literacycoach, or professional development leader is preferred.
Experience as a school administrator is preferred, but notrequired.

Support the efforts of schools, higher education partners, andState government related to improving reading proficiency for allstudents.
Support the leadership and execution of CELL’s literacyprograms
Develop and lead professional development for various audienceson a variety of literacy-specific topics, focused on the science ofreading.
Establish new partnerships and / or continue existingpartnerships
Co-develop partnership scopes of work
Meet on-time deliverables established in partnership scopes ofwork
Engage in the development of professional learning opportunitiesusing academic science of reading, learning sciences andneuroscience studies.
Remain abreast on policy changes and curricular requirementsrelated to literacy in Indiana
Visit schools across Indiana for the purpose of programevaluation and monitoring; some travel is required.
Effectively communicate with CELL leadership staff and forecastprogrammatic barriers to success.
Frequent travel within Indiana required
Follow the guidance and direction of supervisor(s).

COMPETENCIES/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

To perform the job successfully, an individual will demonstrate thefollowing:

An understanding and agreement with the science of reading, asdefined as the preponderance of evidence to inform educators abouthow proficient reading and writing abilities are developed;explaining why some students have difficulty acquiring basicliteracy skills; and how to most effectively assess and improvestudent outcomes through interventions for readingdifficulties.
A deep, practical understanding of phonological/phonemicawareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehensioninstructional and assessment practices.
Experience examining and reviewing research-based principlesassociated with literacy development.
Effective project management skills and experience.
Prior experience in teacher leadership or other leadershiproles.
A working understanding of typical public-school policies, rulesand norms.
