Become a Literacy Coach with the Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT)!

  • Are you passionate about literacy and making a positive impact in your community? Look no further! Our volunteer literacy coaches are the core of our organisation.

About our students

  • Our students range in age from 14 to 65 and come from all walks of life.
  • They may be learning the alphabet, building confidence with everyday reading and writing, or preparing to write essays—most are somewhere in between.
  • What they all have in common is a desire to learn the skills they need for everyday life.
  • You’ll be matched with a student based on your preferences.
  • Your enthusiasm, patience, and commitment are what matter most.

What You'll Do As a Literacy Coach

  • Work one-to-one with a student using video-conferencing.
  • Teach the basics of reading and writing in a supportive, encouraging way.
  • Coach three times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes per session.
  • Allow time for planning and preparing each session (approximately 1.5 hours per week).
  • Attend one professional development webinar each term.
  • Meet with your coordinator once a term to discuss your student’s goals and progress.
  • All training is self-access, online, and free.

What We're Looking For

  • Friendly, patient volunteers who love helping others and enjoy problem-solving.
  • No teaching experience is needed—we provide full training and ongoing support.
  • You’ll need moderate tech skills and confidence using video calls and messaging tools (Slack) to communicate and access our resource library.
  • Tech support is available if needed—using our systems is essential to the role.
Requirements:
  • Good computer skills
  • Fluent in English (both verbal and written)
  • Excellent spoken, reading, and writing skills
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Analytical mindset
  • Friendly and approachable personality

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • Minimum one-year commitment
  • Approximately 3 hours per week, which includes:
  • 1.5 hours preparation time
  • Three 30-minute online tutoring sessions
  • Free, self-paced training completed before you begin tutoring

Ongoing Involvement

  • Attend one professional development webinar each term
  • Meet with your coordinator once per term to review your student’s goals
