Job summary

APPLIED OPTOELECTRONICS INC in Sugar Land, TX is seeking a hands-on Linux & Proxmox Systems Administrator to manage and secure our Linux servers and virtualization stack in a fast-paced on-site manufacturing environment. You will maintain Proxmox VE clusters, VMs/LXC, storage integrations, and automation across IT operations.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of Linux administration with Proxmox VE, strong scripting skills, and solid networking and security knowledge.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3+ years of Linux systems administration experience with Proxmox VE.
• Experience administering Proxmox VE clusters, HA, backups, and storage integration (Ceph, ZFS, NFS, or iSCSI).
• Experience with VM and LXC container management, migrations, snapshots, and performance tuning.
• Strong Linux knowledge (kernel tuning, boot, package management).
• Scripting in Bash and at least one other language (Python, Perl, Ruby).
• Networking knowledge (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewalls, load balancing).
• Security best practices (SELinux, AppArmor, iptables).
• Familiarity with monitoring tools (Zabbix, Nagios, Prometheus, Grafana).
• Backup/recovery tools (Veeam, Proxmox Backup Server, rsync).
• Excellent communication and ability to work independently in a manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers across production and development environments.
• Deploy, configure, and manage Proxmox VE clusters and HA capabilities.
• Create, migrate, snapshot, backup, and restore VMs and containers; monitor resources and performance.
• Manage storage integrated with Proxmox VE (Ceph, ZFS, NFS, iSCSI).
• Perform cluster upgrades and maintain supporting infrastructure.
• Develop automation with Bash, Python, Ansible or similar tools.
• Plan and test backup and disaster recovery processes.
• Collaborate with IT teams to support new systems and services.
• Provide advanced support for Linux systems and virtualization environments.
