The City of Lubbock's electric utility, Lubbock Power & Light, seeks a Journeyman Lineman to construct, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair overhead and underground distribution and transmission systems. You will work with lineworkers, supervisors, engineering, and other utility teams to keep critical infrastructure safe, reliable, and operational.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a four-year accredited electric utility lineman apprenticeship program.
  • Valid CDL appropriate for assigned vehicles and duties.
  • Current First Aid/CPR and LP&L-specific certifications.
  • Pole-top rescue evaluation completed within LP&L requirements (annual).

Responsibilities

  • Climb poles and operate aerial devices to install and replace primary and secondary lines and equipment while energized.
  • Install transformers, switches, cutouts, disconnects, lighting arrestors, insulators, circuit breakers, and other line apparatus.
  • Construct substations and install large electrical equipment for industrial and residential customers.
  • Reconstruct existing primary lines, fittings, transfer wires, and cable; phase and switch circuits.
  • Instruct and train apprentices and groundmen; perform foreman duties in their absence.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Job description

As a Lineman Journey, you'll perform highly skilled electrical utility work to construct, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair LP&L's overhead and underground electric distribution and transmission systems. You'll have the opportunity to keep critical electrical infrastructure safe, reliable, and operational while working alongside fellow lineworkers, supervisors, engineering, operations, and other utility teams.

This role is a great fit for someone who takes pride in skilled craft work, works safely in challenging conditions, solves problems in the field, and understands the importance of reliable electric service to the community.

  • Climb poles and operate aerial devices at various heights above the ground installing and replacing primary and secondary lines and line equipment frequently while distribution primaries are energized. Terminates high voltage cable and repairs high voltage equipment;
  • Installs line equipment such as transformers, switches, cut outs, disconnects, lighting arrestors, insulators, circuit breakers, street light fixtures, and other line apparatus;
  • Installs, hooks up, and maintains pole mounted transformer bank or station serving large industrial customers and residential sections. Builds substations and installs large electrical equipment;
  • Reconstructs existing primary lines, fittings, transfer wires, and cable;
  • Phases, rotates, and installs new circuit in overhead and underground lines;
  • Switches load from one primary to another by closing and opening disconnects and/or oil switches;
  • Relieves trouble lineman as assigned;
  • Installs underground cable and transformers;
  • Instructs and trains apprentice linemen and groundmen;
  • Performs the duties of the foreman in their absence as well as other assigned duties.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a minimum four-year accredited electric utility lineman apprenticeship program.
  • Successful completion of a physical examination.
  • Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) appropriate for assigned vehicles and duties.
  • Current First Aid/CPR and other certifications required for assigned work.
  • Successful completion of an annual pole-top rescue evaluation in under four minutes in accordance with LP&L requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience performing journey-level electric utility construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Experience working with both overhead and underground electric distribution systems.
  • Experience providing field direction, coaching, or instruction to apprentices or less-experienced lineworkers.
  • Experience responding to emergency restoration, storm restoration, or mutual-aid assignments.

Physical Exam Required

Skills & Competencies:
  • Knowledge of electric transmission and distribution systems and ability to construct, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair overhead and underground facilities.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety practices, hazards, and applicable standards and ability to perform energized and de-energized work safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of utility construction methods, equipment, materials, drawings, specifications, and work orders and ability to interpret technical information and complete work to established standards.
  • Knowledge of electrical system operations and troubleshooting practices and ability to diagnose problems, determine corrective action, and restore service.
  • Knowledge of field safety, crew coordination, and work practices and ability to communicate clearly, coach less-experienced employees, and provide field direction when assigned.
Physical Requirements:
  • This position primarily works in outdoor utility and construction environments and will require physical activity associated with performing and supervising electrical line work, including climbing, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and operating tools and equipment.
  • The position will require continuously lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and frequently lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds to load and transport materials and equipment.
  • The employee will be required to work around energized electric facilities, construction equipment, traffic, varying weather conditions, and uneven terrain and will occasionally climb ladders, poles, structures, and equipment or kneel and work in restricted positions.
  • The position will require frequent movement, visual observation, and operation of vehicles and utility equipment.
  • The employee will be required to work varying hours, participate in on-call assignments, respond to emergencies, and support storm restoration as necessary to perform the responsibilities of the position.
