Job description

Discover a more connected Lineman II Telecom career

The position includes physical requirements and the ability to distinguish all colors used in telephone cable; ability to work aloft from ladders, platforms, poles (with climbers); and bucket trucks. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, set up, and secure a 28-foot ladder and load/transfer standard nitrogen cylinders.

This position performs duties such as cable maintenance, installation, removal, rearrangement, and maintenance of single line and associated telecom/apparatus equipment, including cross connections to switching equipment and single-line and multichannel subscriber carriers. The role may involve working out of a bucket truck while being anchored.

What you'll do as a Lineman II Telecom
  • Perform cable and fiber line work, working aloft from the ground at heights from 3 to 40 feet.
  • Climb telephone poles to install and service cable lines according to customer requirements.
  • Read and interpret outside plant facilities.
  • Ensure safety through proper grounding, anchoring, and bonding.
  • Install and repair complex fiber/telecom cables, promptly addressing issues to ensure reliable service.
  • Operate equipment like bucket trucks, digger derricks, and excavators safely.
  • Use hand and power tools such as wrenches, drills, and saws safely.
  • Maintain safe work areas to facilitate traffic flow during work.
  • Work safely at heights using climbing hooks and ladders.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members as needed.
  • Be prepared to travel on short notice for storm response.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll need
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • High School Diploma, GED, or relevant experience.
  • Valid state driver's license (non-provisional) with an acceptable driving record.
  • Valid state CDL license or willingness to obtain one.
  • Knowledge of local cable facilities and fiber networks.
  • Experience with Outside Plant telecom functions.
  • Ability to read and interpret outside and subscriber plant records and schematics.
  • Electronics training or experience demonstrating knowledge of AC/DC theory.
  • Knowledge of bonding and grounding in telecommunications.
  • Assist other technical personnel as needed.
  • Ability to distinguish different cable types (telecom, electrical, fiber, CATV, etc.).
  • Ability to build cable records, cut sheets, and as-builts.
  • Knowledge of connecting bulkheads, splice trays, and storage units.
  • Ability to maintain and repair telephone loop/facilities.
  • Ability to build span lines, install repeaters, and perform tagging and testing on cable pairs for HDSL requirements.
  • Understanding of electronic fiber mux and equipment.
  • Proficiency in working in aerial and buried outside plant environments.
Physical & Safety Requirements

The physical duties include standing, crouching, climbing, sitting, bending, handling, reaching, and working at heights from 3 to 4 feet with safety equipment. The noise level is moderate, and outdoor work conditions can include extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and adverse driving conditions. Employees may lift up to 50 pounds, be exposed to dust, fumes, chemicals, moving machinery, and need good vision abilities.

Pay Range

The hourly wage range is $27.00 - $35.00, depending on experience.
