Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) in Indiana is seeking a field lineworker to assist in the installation, maintenance, and inspection of transmission and distribution facilities. You will drive line trucks and operate related equipment while ensuring safety and reliability across the grid.

You’ll climb poles or work from buckets, install underground components, and handle energized lines with appropriate PPE. Overtime, travel, and on-call duties are expected; a CDL within six months is required,

Qualifications

• High School/GED required.
• No prior experience required; line school training preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid CDL license or obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

• Opens and closes switches and installs grounding devices to lines and equipment.
• Climbs poles or rides in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware.
• Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals.
• Installs pole hardware and such auxiliary equipment as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators.
• Covers energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service.
• Uses insulated poles (hot sticks) with grasping tools to perform energized line work up to 138 KV or 15 KV with rubber gloves.

What You’ll Do: The following list sets forth the principal duties required for the job. Employee may perform miscellaneous, related, and incidental work in addition to that specifically outlined below.

• Opens and closes switches and installs grounding devices to lines and equipment.
• Climbs poles or rides in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware on poles.
• Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals.
• Installs pole hardware and such auxiliary equipment as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools and mechanical devices.
• Covers energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service.
• Uses insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools to perform energized line work up to 138 KV or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work up to 15 KV.

What We’re Looking For

Work Experience requirement listed below: No experience required. Line work experience or line school education is preferred.

Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below: Must possess and maintain a valid CDL state driver's license or be able to obtain one within six months.

Other Requirements

• Must live within 35 mile radius/40 roadway miles of service location.
• Must have the ability to climb and work at heights.
• Must have the ability to communicate with employees, customers and the general public in a courteous and proper manner.
• Must pass the AEP Pre-Assessment Evaluation.
• Must acquire with such time determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher line of progression or vacate the current job classifications.

Work Hours / Travel Requirements

40 hours per week with overtime and travel as required. Must be available for overtime callout including weekends and holidays. This role requires regular overtime and on-call response. Travel, including out of town travel, may also be required.

Compensation Range: $34.07 - $34.07

H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
