Job summary

The City of Wilson, NC is seeking Line Technicians to install, maintain and repair electric distribution equipment across overhead and underground systems. You will climb poles, operate bucket trucks, and respond to emergencies to ensure safe, reliable service.

Positions span I–III with increasing responsibilities and pay ranges. A high school diploma plus basic training or apprenticeship is required, along with a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a CDL within six months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with specialized training in the field.
• Experience or training in electrical distribution work preferred.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license for the vehicle operated.
• Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of hire.
• Knowledge of safety guidelines and relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, operate and maintain overhead and underground distribution lines.
• Climb utility poles to install hardware, fuses and transformers.
• Perform switching, grounding and routine inspections of equipment.
• Operate a bucket truck and digger derrick; pull wire as needed.

The hiring range for this position is $47,400.71 (minimum salary) to $65,277.98 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Line Technician I.

The hiring range for this position is $57,753.17 (minimum salary) to $79,534.89 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Line Technician II.

The hiring range for this position is $77,671.57 (minimum salary) to $106,965.56 (midpoint of range) dependent upon qualifications for a Line Technician III.

The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution system equipment. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric utilities.

The work consists of related technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical distribution equipment. Work performed in inclement weather and with high voltage contributes to the complexity of the position.

Line Technician I

Major Duties

• Assists others in the installation, repair, operation and maintenance of the electric distribution system while de-energized.
• Climbs utility poles to install hardware, fuses and transformers.
• Maintains existing high and low voltage lines.
• Performs switching and grounding of distribution lines.
• Installs and removes cross arms, lighting arresters, primary and secondary lines, and span guys.
• Operates a bucket truck and digger derrick.
• Sets and pulls poles; installs anchors.
• Performs regular inspections and maintenance of equipment.
• Pulls wire to install electric utility distribution system.
• Installs underground utility services.
• Maintains and repairs substation equipment.
• Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Climbs utility poles to install hardware, fuses and transformers.

• Installs and removes cross arms, lighting arresters, primary and secondary lines, and span guys.
• Operates a bucket truck and digger derrick.
• Pulls wire to install electric utility distribution system.
• Installs underground utility services.
• Maintains and repairs substation equipment.
• Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Operates a bucket truck and digger derrick.
• Pulls wire to install electric utility distribution system.
• Installs underground utility services.
• Maintains and repairs substation equipment.
• Assists in field installation of load management devices.
• Ties in conductors and changes insulators.
• Maintains and repairs street and rental lights.
• Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Line Technician I

Education/Experience Requirements

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a valid driver's license is required with the ability to acquire a Class A CDL within six months of hire.
• Must have passed LCDP I to be promoted to a Line Technician II.

Knowledge Requirements

• Knowledge of the equipment, materials, principles and practices used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electric utilities.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to electric utilities.
• Knowledge of safety procedures and guidelines.

• Must have passed LCDP II to be promoted to a Line Technician III.
