INTERNAL/EXTERNAL JOB POSTING

Line Technician 1st & 2nd Class

Department: R&O/T&D Operations

Reports to: T&D Line Supervisor

Location: Multiple

Pay Rate: Hourly: $30.50 - $40.70

Classification: Represented/Non Exempt

Posting Dates: Tuesday, 04/10/18 until filled

SECO Energy is a not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative serving over 200,000 families and businesses across seven counties in Central Florida, making SECO Energy the third largest electric co-op in Florida and the sixth largest in the nation.

General Purpose of Job: This position is responsible for performing construction, maintenance and service restoration on both energized and de-energized overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines and facilities; assist in planning jobs to ensure compliance with safety and construction standards; drive and operate line vehicles as well as assist in stocking trucks with tools, parts and equipment.

Education and Experience

Required for 1st & 2nd Class:

  • High School diploma or GED.

Preferred for 1st and 2nd Class:

  • Job experience with a distribution electric utility or related industry.
  • Qualification in transmission line work.

Required for 1st Class:

  • Certification as a Journeyman Line Technician from an accredited line worker apprentice program with a minimum of one year experience as a fully qualified Line Technician 1st Class/Journeyman or equivalent.
  • The equivalent job experience without the Journeyman Certification for consideration will be a minimum of five (5) years combined progressive experience with one or more electric distribution companies or utilities.
  • Experience in overhead and underground distribution construction, maintenance and troubleshooting.

Required for 2nd Class:

  • Line apprenticeship training or other related continuing education required for progression in classification.
  • Minimum of two years progressive experience in the construction, maintenance, installation/removal of equipment on overhead or underground distribution electric facilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1st Class:

  • Thorough knowledge of construction, operation and maintenance of all overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities and transmission line equipment.
  • Solid understanding of electricity, mathematics and reading comprehension.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong aptitude with materials and equipment utilized in the construction and maintenance of overhead feeders and tap-level installations.
  • Proficient in the safe use and operation of digger-derricks, bucket truck and other related electrical construction tools and equipment.
  • Demonstrated skill in pole climbing and working from a bucket.

2nd Class:

  • Demonstrated aptitude and commitment to successfully progress in the classification within prescribed time frame.
  • Ability to acquire and demonstrate acceptable knowledge and skill of electrical math, reading and writing skills.

1st & 2nd Class:

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including personal computers.
  • Effective communication skills including written, verbal and listening.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Living Requirement

Employees in this classification must live within a 30-mile radius from the assigned reporting work location.

General Requirements
  • Valid Florida Class A Commercial driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment job classification knowledge assessment and post-offer medical exam, drug screen and background check.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This description is intended to indicate the kinds of tasks and levels of work difficulty required of the position.

1st Class:

  • Safely construct, maintain and restore all phases of electrical line construction.
  • Drive and operate bucket truck, digger-derrick, trencher, forklift and other equipment.
  • Respond to power outages and customer problems.

2nd Class:

  • Assist journeyman technicians in the safe construction of all phases of electrical line construction.
  • Drive and operate bucket truck, digger-derrick, trencher, forklift and other equipment.
