Job description

Salary/Position Classification
  • $25.00+ Hourly, Dependent on Experience, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • $5000 sign-on bonus:
    • $2,500 paying at hire, remaining $2,500 paying upon successful completed of the 6 month probationary period
  • 40 hours per week
  • 100% Remote Work Availability: No
  • Hybrid Work Availability (requires some time on campus): No
Purpose of Position

To provide service and maintenance for the vehicles/equipment for the UND Aerospace Line Department. Perform line operations in support of flying activity.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Service and repair fueling vehicles, support equipment. Maintain line maintenance area and office:
    • Perform or coordinate, general maintenance and repairs to the line operation ground support vehicle/equipment including: fueling vehicles, tug tow tractors, pre-heaters, helicopter trailer carts, ground power units, and defrost/deice fluid carts.
    • Duties encompass the following: engine overhaul, tune-up, valve and seat rework, oil and filter changes, tire, wheels and brake work, major and minor repair, and some vehicle body and coatings.
    • All servicing of fuel trucks including leaks, electrical, air brake service, fuel system filter elements replacement, installation of new hoses, nozzle repair or replacement, and automated fuel servicing computer.
    • Schedule and coordinate repairs and testing for vehicles and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
    • Purchase replacement parts and equipment to maintain vehicles and GSE purchasing guidelines and restrictions.
    • Maintain and control an on-site inventory of GSE and vehicle expendable parts and supplies such as lubricants, filters and spare parts.
    • Arrange for maintenance of UND Fuel Farm storage equipment and coordinate maintenance actions at the fuel storage facility.
    • Properly dispose of contaminated fuel, oil, solvents and other waste products.
    • Compile and maintain current inspection requirements, documentation, and maintenance history for AIMS data entry, fuel equipment inspection requirements and a general safe equipment operation and environment.
    • Use wire feed and gas welders and other tools and equipment to repair and manufacture support equipment.
    • Utilize available line operator manpower; request assistance from the Line Supervisor for assistance on vehicle repair and cleaning, moving heavy objects, shop projects, and clean-up. Assign specific duties to part-time student staff, effectively supervising and utilizing manpower.
    • Maintain accountability for personal tools and shop specialty tools/equipment.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of: Maintenance Shop and Administration Office area. Ensures safe, orderly, and organized work environment.
    • Provide support to line operations during manpower shortages and as operation requires such as during weather or storm stacking of aircraft.
    • Provide training to line operator staff on the proper operation of vehicles and equipment. - (60%)
  • Perform Tank Farm operations and perform line support operations:
    • Sump fuel farm, perform differential pressure checks, document daily inventory, and inspection requirements.
    • Off-load commercial tanker trucks and on-load mobile fuel trucks.
    • Performing line support operations such as fueling, aircraft ground movements (towing and stacking), and all other required ground support operations. - (20%)
  • Train Staff on Line support operations:
    • Train Line Operator’s on the mechanical operation and proper procedures of mobile fuel trucks and ground support equipment including: tug tow tractors, fuel trucks, heaters, external power carts, tow bars, deicing/defrost carts, and other support equipment.
    • Train Line Operator’s to proficiency in the operation of pickup truck snow plow operations and utilization of the various attachments for Bob Cat (Tool Cat) operations.
    • Train part time student staff to assist with line maintenance duties. - (20%)
Required Competencies
  • Requires mechanical aptitude for operation of aircraft/helicopter towing vehicles/equipment, operating fuel trucks, and ground support equipment including: heaters, ground power units, defrosting/deicing carts, and bug bust washing cart.
  • Ability to fulfill responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to comply with policies and procedures incorporating the principles of Safety Management System to eliminate or minimize associated risks to the lowest level.
  • Strong communication skills necessary in coordinating duties with internal staff and external customers.
  • Requires good mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Requires sufficient personal tools to perform required maintenance and repairs.
Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years’ experience working in the aviation ground support or transportation related industry as a Mechanic.
  • Experience in welding - wire feed and gas welding.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Diesel or Engine Mechanic certification or similar previous experience.
  • Prior experience maintaining and performing repairs on aviation tug tractor equipment or similar vehicles.
  • Prior experience maintaining and performing repairs on mobile fuel trucks.
  • Prior experience maintaining and performing repairs on various types of aviation ground support equipment.
