Our Outside Plant Technicians start off earning between $14.25 to $28.56 per hour. With our competitive wage opportunities, the average starting earnings begin at $59,410 per year. Individual salaries may vary based on geography, experience, expertise, and education/training.

An Outside Plant Technician performs construction tasks such as laying telephone cable and conduits underground, stringing cable from pole to pole, and connecting wires and cables. Responsibilities include:

1. Installing, connecting, maintaining, and dismantling aerial, buried, building, or underground telephone wiring and cable.
2. Performing construction tasks like digging holes, placing poles, laying cable and conduit, and stringing wire from pole to pole.
3. Connecting wires to terminals and attaching hardware to wires, cables, buildings, or poles.
4. Climbing poles or using bucket trucks; entering tunnels, manholes, and trenches.
5. Operating electrical, hydraulic equipment, and hand tools; operating propane or gas-powered compressors.
6. Preparing reports, records, logs, or requisitions as needed.
7. Ordering supplies, interpreting blueprints, and logging extra materials and hours.
8. Upholding SBC's reputation as a premier provider.
9. Performing other duties as assigned, following safety practices and using appropriate safety equipment.

Our Outside Plant Technicians must have:

• Valid state driver’s license
• Clean driving record
• Ability to meet a 275 lbs weight limit for safety reasons
• Ability to pass a Department of Transportation Physical and CDL Training
• Ability to perceive wire and cable color differences
• Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs
• Qualify on pre-employment screening, including:
