Job description

The Commercial Lighting Controls Manager is responsible for managing the design, specification, quotation, sales support, and execution of commercial lighting control systems. This position serves as the primary controls resource for customers, electrical contractors, distributors, engineers, architects, manufacturers, and the company’s sales team.

The ideal candidate possesses strong technical knowledge of lighting control systems and can translate project requirements into practical, code-compliant solutions. This person will support projects from initial design and budgeting through submittals, installation, programming, commissioning, and final closeout.

Key Responsibilities

• Design commercial lighting control systems based on construction drawings, specifications, energy codes, and customer requirements.
• Review electrical plans, lighting schedules, control narratives, and project specifications to determine system requirements.
• Prepare control system layouts, bills of material, quotations, sequence-of-operation documents, and related project documentation.
• Provide technical and sales support to electrical contractors, distributors, engineers, architects, end users, and internal sales representatives.
• Recommend appropriate lighting control products and system configurations for new construction and retrofit projects.
• Ensure proposed systems comply with applicable energy codes, including ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and local code requirements.
• Manage lighting controls projects from initial quotation through completion.
• Coordinate submittals, approvals, product releases, delivery schedules, change orders, startup, and commissioning.
• Review project documentation for accuracy, completeness, compatibility, and potential installation issues.
• Work closely with manufacturers and factory representatives to resolve technical, pricing, availability, and application questions.
• Conduct preconstruction meetings and provide installation guidance to contractors and field personnel.
• Coordinate system programming, startup, testing, commissioning, and owner training.
• Troubleshoot lighting control systems remotely and in the field when necessary.
• Maintain accurate records of quotations, project status, correspondence, revisions, and customer activity.
• Monitor project schedules and proactively communicate potential delays, conflicts, or scope changes.
• Assist the sales team with customer presentations, product demonstrations, training sessions, and specification efforts.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers, manufacturers, contractors, engineers, and other industry partners.
• Stay current on lighting control technologies, wireless systems, networked controls, building automation integration, energy codes, and industry trends.
• Identify opportunities to increase controls sales and expand the company’s presence in the commercial lighting market.

Qualifications

• Three or more years of experience with commercial lighting controls, electrical systems, lighting design, or a related field preferred.
• Strong knowledge of commercial lighting control products, applications, and installation practices.
• Experience reviewing electrical construction drawings, specifications, and control sequences.
• Familiarity with occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting, dimming systems, relay panels, wireless controls, networked lighting controls, and building automation interfaces.
• Understanding of common control protocols and technologies, including 0–10V, DALI, DMX, BACnet, and wireless control platforms.
• Familiarity with commercial energy codes and lighting control requirements.
• Experience preparing quotations, bills of material, submittals, and project documentation.
• Strong project-management, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to customers and individuals with varying levels of technical knowledge.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn manufacturer-specific design, quotation, and programming software.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and customer priorities simultaneously.
• Willingness to travel locally to job sites, customer meetings, training sessions, and industry events as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working for a commercial lighting sales agency, lighting manufacturer, electrical distributor, electrical contractor, or lighting controls integrator.
• Manufacturer certifications in commercial lighting control systems.
• Experience programming and commissioning lighting control systems.
• Knowledge of commercial construction processes and electrical project coordination.
• Experience with estimating, takeoff, CRM, quotation, or project-management software.
• Electrical, engineering, lighting design, or construction-related education or training.
