Job summary

Knox County is seeking a Light Equipment Operator 2 to support highway and grounds maintenance activities. The role involves operating tractors with bush hogs, dump trucks, and assisting multiple departments with concrete, asphalt, and drainage tasks.

The position requires a valid Tennessee CDL and a DOT pre-employment drug screen. It is safety sensitive and may involve on-site outdoor work year-round.

• Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Commercial Drivers License.

Job description

The purpose of this classification is to operate light motor equipment and assist and support work crews.

This is a safety sensitive position that requires a drug screen.

Essential Functions

The Light Equipment Operator 2 is responsible for the following essential functions:

• Operates tractor with bush hog attachment to mow right a ways.
• Operates tandem axle dump trucks with consistent hauling of equipment and materials.
• Assists the Highway Department in the completion of various tasks to include the application of concrete and asphalt surfaces.
• Assists the Drainage Department in the completion of various tasks to include laying drain tiles.
• Drives truck to deliver workers, tools, supplies, and equipment to job sites as necessary.
• Operates and transports brush and wood chipper as necessary.
• Trims trees, mows right-of-ways, cuts brushes, and performs other grounds maintenance tasks.
• Cleans, changes oil, and otherwise services machines and other equipment

Additional Job Functions

• Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
• Perform other duties as required

Minimum Training & Qualifications

• High School Diploma, or GED; with two (2) years experience in highway and grounds maintenance and the operation of light motor equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Commercial Drivers License. Applicants who are offered this job MUST take a DOT pre-employment drug test. Passing the drug test is required in order to start the job.

• Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors, cold and hot weather conditions including precipitation
• Exposure to gasoline and diesel fuel.
• Exposure to working ininclement weather
• Exposure to construction site hazards such asmechanized equipment,timber, hand and power tools,uneven terrain,inclement weather,etc.
