Job summary

Clayton County seeks an Equipment Operator II to drive and operate heavy construction equipment on Transportation and Development projects. You will work under supervision performing maintenance and construction tasks such as road/sidewalk work, grading, and equipment operation on various job sites.

Typical duties include operating bulldozers, loaders, and backhoes, performing preventive maintenance, and supervising inmates as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED supplemented by five (5) years of experience operating and driving equipment in support of maintenance projects.
  • A valid Georgia Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) depending on type of equipment/vehicle operated is preferred.
  • May be required to be certified by the Criminal Justice Department to supervise inmates.
  • Preferred candidate would hold certification as a Flagman.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates heavy track or rubber-tired construction equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, track hoes, backhoes, lowboys, milling machines, paving machines, and tractor/trailers.
  • Maintains and repairs roads, curbs, and sidewalks within County rights-of-way or easements.
  • Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public.
  • Supervises inmates as assigned; provides limited guidance to crew workers and less experienced equipment operators.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and minor operator repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Operates smaller vehicles and equipment as needed to include dump trucks, chippers, chain saws, jack hammers, hand, and power tools.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II - T & D

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Equipment Operator II

Drives and operates heavy construction equipment. Performs work on Transportation and Development maintenance and construction projects. Positions in this class operate track or rubber-tired construction equipment with specialized functions. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level operator, foreman, or supervisor who frequently monitors and inspects work while in progress and upon completion.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Drives and operates heavy track or rubber-tired construction equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, track hoes, backhoes, lowboys, milling machines, paving machines, and tractor/trailers. Maintains and repairs roads, curbs, and sidewalks within County rights-of-way or easements. Grades slopes; lays pipes; builds roads, shoulders, parking lots, etc.; clears and logs trees; distribute asphalt; sets and compacts bases; performs skilled trenching; operates ice removal equipment, etc. Operates smaller vehicles and equipment as needed to include dump trucks, chippers, chain saws, jack hammers, hand, and power tools. Cuts trees, brush, and rights-of-way; cuts and mows grass; picks up litter and debris from streets and rights-of-way; cleans ditches and drains; picks up leaves. Flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public. Supervises inmates as assigned; provides limited guidance to crew workers and less experienced equipment operators. Performs preventive maintenance and minor operator repairs on tools, equipment and vehicles.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

When needed, may require the use of hand tools including rakes, shovels, posthole diggers, brooms, chainsaws, chippers, etc. When needed, may require operation of trucks to transport materials and equipment to and from the worksites. Participates in the Department’s Emergency Response/Call-Back Program as required. Participates as needed in efforts related to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, and other emergency situations. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED supplemented by five (5) years of experience operating and driving equipment in support of maintenance projects; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. A valid Georgia Class A Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) depending on type of equipment/vehicle operated is preferred. May be required to be certified by the Criminal Justice Department to supervise inmates. Preferred candidate would hold certification as a Flagman.
