Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The City of Stephenville is seeking a full‑time Light Equipment Operator working under the direction of the Utilities Superintendent.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure city vehicle has supplies and materials necessary to perform job assignments; operate, clean, service, maintain, and perform minor repairs on assigned tools, machinery, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Respond to service calls concerning emergencies or problems on a stand‑by basis; work to reduce the state of emergency and correct problems; perform overtime duties as necessary or required to maintain effective and efficient city services.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including pickups, dump trucks, jet rodding machines, brush‑hogs, tractors with various attachments, lawnmowers, weed eaters, and other related maintenance equipment.
  • Secure and partition off work area as necessary with traffic signs, cones, and barricades; flag and direct traffic around the work area as necessary.
  • Work on‑call duty and respond to emergency call back as required by supervisor.

  • Participate in repairing water and wastewater mains and services; break apart paved surfaces in preparation of line excavation; install shoring devices for excavations to prevent trench cave‑ins; clamp off broken main or line, and mow and edge facilities.
  • Clean manholes; participate in constructing and rebuilding manholes; assist in installing and repairing fire hydrants.
  • Participate in testing water and wastewater lines for leaks; inspect valves for operability; locate water and wastewater lines and connections; lay and extend new water and wastewater lines in preparation for future use; remove obstructions from wastewater lines.
  • Assist in repairing and reading water meters and water and wastewater services; repair and install service taps; flush water lines.
  • Pull and install meters; replace meter boxes as necessary; install clean outs; raise and lower meters and manholes as necessary.
  • Clean streets and work area after repair work are completed; grade drainage channels to proper grade to enhance drainage; landscape city and residential property upon completion of repairs; clean and unclog wastewater lines.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Materials and supplies used in the maintenance, repair, and servicing of machinery, equipment, and facilities of the department.
  • Proper lifting techniques for minimizing physical injury.
  • Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
  • Proper barricading procedures for partitioning off the work area.
  • Proper procedures for mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.
  • Basic carpentry, masonry, and plumbing principles and practices.
  • Pressure settings for various water lines.
  • Various procedures for evaluating and maintaining consistent flow in water and wastewater lines.
  • Procedure for clamping and repairing a water or wastewater leak.
  • Installation techniques for safety shoring devices.
  • Procedures for the handling and storing of volatile chemicals and the disposal of chemical by‑products.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, policies, and regulations.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Must hold a valid Texas driver’s license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to communicate (read, write and speak) effectively in the English language
  • Formal or informal education or training ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • High School Diploma or GED required
Experience and Training Guidelines
  • A Texas State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection license is highly desired.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate, valid water and/or wastewater license.
  • Must acquire class 1 wastewater collection and Class C water distribution license within 3 years of hire.
Work Environment/Physical Demands

Majority of work is performed outside in all types of weather including extreme heat and cold weather conditions.
