ALight Equipment Operatorfor the Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining and improving public facilities, spaces, and infrastructure. Work is performed under supervision, to execute maintenance and construction tasks of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature.Work is characterized by the necessity for considerable physicaleffort, potential close contact with unpleasant materials, and working out of doors under occasionally adverse weather conditions.AValidCommercial Driver’s License,ClassB, with an air brake endorsement, is required.

Natureof Work Duties
- Inspect and remove miscellaneous debris from streets, parking areas, and City facilities.
- Operate andmaintainlight-duty pickup trucks and service vans by conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks(fluid levels, brake and steering components, tires, lighting,etc.).
- Operate andmaintainmedium-dutydump trucks, stake trucks, and box trucks by conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks(fluid levels, brake and steering components, tires, lighting,etc.).
- Operate andmaintainheavy-duty dump trucks by conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks(fluid levels, brake and steering components, tires, lighting,etc.).
- Operate andmaintainloaders andtractorsby conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks (fluid levels, brake and steering components, tires, lighting, etc.).
- Inspect, replace, and maintain blades for all equipment, including dump trucks, loaders, chippers, plows, and tractors.
- Operate andmaintainchainsaws ofvarious sizes.
- Trim, cut, and fell trees as directed by the department supervisor or superintendent.
- Feed tree debris into the chipper,load andremovethe debris to designated areas.
- Maintain aerial buckettrucksby conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks (fluid levels, brake and steering components, tires, lighting, etc.).
- Operate andmaintainsnowblowers.
- Remove snow from designated areas and load it into dump trucks in accordance with weight requirements.
- Operate andmaintainzero-turn mowers.
- Cut,weed whip, and edgegrass and weeds in designated areas.
- Maintaintractormowing decksby conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks (fluid levels, brake and steering components, tires, lighting, etc.).
- Maintain air compressors by checking tires and fluids and lubricating equipment.
- Operate leaf loaders and sweepers to remove leaves from streets.
- Maintain leaf loaders and sweepers by checking tires and fluids, inspecting brooms, and lubricating equipment.
- Use aleaf vacuumto remove collected leaves.
- Maintain theleaf vacuumby conducting mandatory safety walk-around checks.
- Fasten attachments, such as graders, plows, and rollers, to tractors using hitch pins.
- Release brakes, shift gears, depress the accelerator, and adjust the throttle to control the forward and backward movement of tractors.
- Steer tractors by turning the steering wheel and depressing the brake pedals.
General Duties
- Provide operational support at City-sponsored events, including trash removal, restroom maintenance, general cleanup, and other assigned duties.
- Assist with the setup and teardown of City-sponsored events.
- Perform other assignments as required by supervision to maintain departmental efficiency.
- Be available periodically for after-hours and emergency work.
Environmental Conditions and Equipment Used
- Works in indoor and outdoor environments and may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and other adverse weather conditions.
- May include contact with water, toxic chemical/biological agents, other liquids, and humidity.
- Noise/vibration exposure that could be enough to cause distraction and hearing loss as well as bodily harm.
- Work may involve exposure to physical hazards, including moving mechanical parts, electrical hazards, chemicals, biological materials, noise, vibration, and adverse weather conditions.
- Uses tools and equipmentrelatedto the position, including charts, blueprints, diagrams, manuals, etc.

Civil Service Process:
- Must pass a Civil ServiceAssessmentwith a score of 70% or higher.
- Must pass a panel interview conducted through the Civil Service process.
- Must pass a background check.
- Must pass post-offer physical examination with a drug screening.
Qualifications: MinimumTraining, Licensing, Education and Experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License - Class B with an Air Brake Endorsement.
- Must meet General Government Civil Service Driving Standards.
- Must successfully complete the required Civil Service examination process.
