Job summary

Sarasota County Government is seeking a Lift Station Technician through a comprehensive apprenticeship program to maintain and repair pumps, valves, and control systems integral to the wastewater system.

The role includes hands-on on-the-job training, evening coursework through the STC Electrical Program, and a structured path to industry credentials, with potential CDL endorsement within six months and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to obtain a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six months at time of hire (paid by Sarasota County).
• Must complete a two-year training program to perform Lift Station duties.
• Valid Florida Driver's License at time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Install/repair/modify mechanical and electrical equipment at Public Utilities facilities (pumps, valves, control panels, etc.).
• Document and maintain work orders, parts inventory and safety records.
• Operate electrical testing tools and equipment (multimeter, voltmeter, megohmmeter).
• Read wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints and written instructions.
• Work with crane trucks to service lift stations.

About this role

As an Apprentice

• This comprehensive apprenticeship program combines hands-on training, evening coursework through the STC Electrical Program, and self-paced learning to help you build your technical skills while earning valuable experience. It's a unique opportunity to develop a rewarding career and become a qualified Lift Station Technician
• Gain hands-on experience through on-the-job training with an experienced technician
• Attend evening coursework through the STC Electrical Program
• Complete the self-paced Sacramento Lift Station Training Program

As a Skilled Trades Worker II

• Install, replace, repair, and modify mechanical and electrical equipment located on and within Public Utilities facilities, including, but not limited to, pumps, pump valves, regulators, actuators, control panels, communication systems, motor controls, electronic filtering, and switching systems
• Document and maintain work orders, parts inventory, and safety records
• Proficient in the operation of an electric multimeter, voltmeter, and megohmmeter, battery operator tools, hand tools, chainsaws, and other gas-powered equipment
• Operate crane trucks to remove and install pumps from wet wells and other lift station maintenance activities
• Read and follow color codes, wiring diagrams and schematics, blueprints, plans, and written instructions

Work Hours:

• Monday - Friday
• 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
• *On-Call Required

About You

Apprentice Trainee: Starting Pay: $18.09/hour

• High School Diploma or its equivalent
• The ability to acquire a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six (6) months at the time of hire. Paid for by Sarasota County!
• Must have the ability and commitment to successfully complete an extensive two (2) year training program designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of a Lift Station position
• Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire

Apprentice Skilled Trades Worker I: Starting Pay: $20.10/hour

• High School Diploma or its equivalent
• Two (2) years of experience in applicable trades which include work in the water/wastewater collection field and or experience performing pump, valve, or hydraulic system repair and maintenance including electrical troubleshooting and repairsThe ability to acquire a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six (6) months at the time of hire. Paid for by Sarasota County!
• Must have the ability and commitment to successfully complete an extensive one (1) year training program designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of a Lift Station position
• Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire

Skilled Trades Worker II: Starting Pay: $22.14 (Step 1) Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience

• High School Diploma or its equivalent
• Three (3) years of experience in applicable trades which include work in the water/wastewater collection field and or experience performing pump, valve, or hydraulic system repair and maintenance including electrical troubleshooting and repairs
• The ability to acquire a Class "A" CDL with air brake endorsement within six (6) months at the time of hire.Paid for by Sarasota County!
• Valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire

Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years
