Job description

The Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports, a division of Athletics at the University of Virginia, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Lifeguard (a part-time, wage position). Lifeguards work at both the Aquatic & Fitness and North Grounds Recreation Center aquatics facilities.

Responsibilities:
  1. Supervise the activities of swimmers by enforcing rules and regulations
  2. Attend and participate in all staff meetings and in-services
  3. Be willing and able to work scheduled university breaks including Fall Break, November, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer
  4. Work some opening and closing shifts when available
  5. Work a minimum of 2-3 shifts per month
  6. Maintain scheduled shifts and provide periodic supervision of the entire pool area, including locker rooms
  7. Assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related areas and facilities
  8. Warn swimmers of improper activities or hazards, answer questions related to the pool, and refer concerns to the Aquatic Manager
  9. Perform rescues of persons in distress or in danger of drowning and provide emergency care as needed
  10. Notify the Aquatic Manager of any accidents, rescues, or problems in the pool area, including equipment issues
  11. Work effectively within a team environment
  12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Manager or supervisor
  13. Maintain a respectful, professional, and positive attitude towards the University of Virginia and the department
Position Details:

Compensation: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour

This is a wage position not eligible for leave or benefits, limited to 1500 hours annually. For more details, see the Wage Employment Policy.
