Job description

The Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports, a division of Athletics at the University of Virginia, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Lifeguard (a part-time, wage position). Lifeguards work at both the Aquatic & Fitness and North Grounds Recreation Center aquatics facilities.

Lifeguards will:

1. Supervise the activities of swimmers by enforcing rules and regulations
2. Attend and participate in all staff meetings and in-services
3. Be willing and able to work scheduled university breaks including Fall Break, November, Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer
4. Be willing to work some opening and closing shifts when available
5. Work a minimum of 2-3 shifts per month
6. Maintain scheduled shifts and periodically supervise the entire pool area, including locker rooms
7. Assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related areas and facilities
8. Warn swimmers of improper activities or hazards, answer questions related to the pool, and refer concerns to the Aquatic Manager
9. Perform rescues of persons in distress or danger of drowning and provide emergency care as needed
10. Notify the Aquatic Manager of accidents, rescues, or problems within or related to the pool area, including equipment issues
11. Work effectively within a team environment
12. Perform other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Manager or supervisor
13. Represent the University of Virginia and the Intramural-Recreational Sports Department respectfully, professionally, and positively

Position Compensation: $15.00 - $16.00 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience: Lifeguard/First Aid certification must be obtained before the first day of work.
