Recreation Department

Under general supervision, the position's purpose is to provide swimming and safety instruction to ensure the safety of patrons at the City's public swimming facility. Employees in this role perform at journey staff level, responsible for teaching various swimming activities and assisting with special functions. They also help maintain the pool and surrounding areas. The main objective is to ensure safety and welfare of the public engaging in swimming activities through guarding and instruction.

Responsibilities include:

1. Conducting protective service work to ensure safe use of the swimming facility.
2. Providing water rescue, CPR, or first aid as needed.
3. Monitoring swimmer actions and maintaining discipline.
4. Enforcing water safety rules tactfully and effectively.
5. Teaching swimming, lifesaving, water exercise, and other water-related classes to all ages.
6. Assisting with training sessions and managing teaching materials.
7. Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the pool and surrounding areas.
8. Participating in community programs, special projects, and recreational functions.

Additional duties include:

• Performing related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent experience.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
• Current CPR Certification.
• Knowledge of water safety principles and instructional practices.
• Skills in First Aid procedures.
• Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
• Customer service skills and ability to react calmly in emergencies.
• Ability to observe and report activities clearly.
• Basic operation of office equipment and software applications.
• Ability to establish effective relationships with staff and the public.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks involve moderate physical effort, including sitting, standing, walking, swimming, and emergency work that may involve running, climbing, lifting (up to 150 pounds), and other physically demanding activities.
