Position Summary:

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Creates a safe and positive environment for participants to learn to swim.

Essential Functions:
While performing work duties as a Lifeguard 1:
  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds immediately in accordance with YMCA policies. Completes related reports as required.
  • Serves as a first responder in emergencies.
  • Maintains effective relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Understands and applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Remains rescue ready at all times during scheduled work hours.
  • Ensures shift coverage at all times.
  • Conducts and monitors swim tests prior to pool activities.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures availability of appropriate equipment.
  • Checks the pool for hazards upon arrival.
  • Provides emergency care until medical professionals arrive.
  • Performs chemical testing and takes appropriate actions.
  • Attends all staff meetings, trainings, and YMCA functions as required.
  • Maintains open communication with participants, coaches, referees, staff, and supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
While performing work duties as a Swim Instructor 1:
  • Ensures a safe swimming environment.
  • Prepares for and teaches assigned classes using lesson plans and evaluation sheets.
  • Ensures shift coverage at all times.
  • Tests and evaluates students at least twice during the session, issuing progress reports.
  • Must be suited, on deck, and ready during shift.
  • Follows safety standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Serves as a first responder in emergencies.
  • Attends all meetings, trainings, and YMCA functions.
  • Maintains communication with participants, coaches, referees, staff, and supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 16 years old; over 18 preferred.
  • High school or equivalent required; diploma preferred.
  • Current swim instructor certification from YMCA or Red Cross, including First Aid, CPR, AED; must be maintained.
  • Pass pre-employment practicum and written exam.
  • Able to perform all instructor requirements and skills.
  • Criminal background check including fingerprints.
  • Negative TB and drug tests.
  • Complete all online training.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations is a plus.
Working Conditions:

Environmental Factors: Indoor/outdoor facilities, exposure to chemicals, noise, slippery surfaces.

Physical Demands: Regular use of hands, standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and visual acuity.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.16 - $20.60 per hour
