Job summary

Lakeland Hills YMCA in Mountain Lakes, NJ is seeking a Part-Time Lifeguard to supervise pool safety during daytime shifts. The role requires current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent, CPR/First Aid, AED, and the ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

You will monitor swimmer behavior, enforce rules, perform two-hourly chemical tests, and coordinate with the Aquatics Leadership Team to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for members.

Qualifications

• Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent certification.
• Ability to maintain certification-level readiness.
• Ability to observe large groups of swimmers and prevent injuries.
• AED, CPR, First Aid certified.

Responsibilities

• Enforce pool rules and actively address members to maintain safety.
• Identify and respond to emergencies per EAP; provide first aid when needed.
• Complete incident reports and contact Aquatics Leadership Team as required.
• Check pool/deck for hazards at shift start and during shift.
• Perform chemical testing every two hours during lifeguarding shifts.

Reports to: Aquatics Leadership Team, Deck Supervisor

Essential Functions

• Be identifiable with a lifeguard shirt, whistle, swimsuit, hip pack and rescue tube.
• Enforce all pool rules and proactively address members to maintain a safe environment.
• Must be skilled in observing large groups of swimmers and be ready at all times to prevent serious injuries.
• Review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the emergency action plan (EAP) and provide first aid when needed. Complete incident reports as required and contact the Aquatics Leadership Team.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
• Check the pool and deck for hazardous conditions when arriving and throughout the shift.
• Performs chemical testing every two hours during lifeguarding shift. Notifies supervisor of any issues.
