Job description

Individuals assigned to this position are responsible for instructing swim lessons and/or water fitness and Lifeguarding. The position is within the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and works under the supervisory direction of the Aquatics Supervisor and Assistant Aquatics Supervisors. The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional position specific duties.

  • Maintain a safe swimming environment by enforcing all the rules and regulations of the pool area.
  • Monitor the patrons and the activities, identifying potential safety concerns and taking action to prevent accidents or injuries.
  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations, including administering first aid, rescuing swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administering CPR.
  • Report any accidents or incidents to Aquatics Supervisory staff immediately, notifying 911, and completing accident reports, as directed.
  • Teach swim lessons to all levels and age groups assigned in accordance with the instructor objectives, curriculum and teaching policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate written records of student progress and participate in required in-service training sessions.
  • Use and store equipment appropriately, assisting with pool set up and general cleaning of equipment and natatorium.
  • Provide a high level of customer service in every interaction with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities specific to the location/building and upon the request of the aquatic supervisors.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Physical Demands:

  • Physical requirements include: the ability to kneel, bend, reach, climb, stand for long durations of time, and lift 50-100 pounds at a time.
  • Visual acuity to observe activities and read written materials.
  • Adequate fitness to perform rescues and administer necessary first aid.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to speak and hear to exchange information with staff and students.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Pass a pre-employment swim test.
  • Possess a valid CPR and Lifeguarding certification from a recognized agency within 6 months from hire date.
  • Successfully complete quarterly in-service training.
  • Successfully complete all training within 6 months of employment.
  • Must commit to working at least one shift per week for a minimum of 6 months.
