The City of Independence Parks & Recreation Department is committed to excellence in programming, facilities, and service, aiming to improve the quality of life within our community. We are looking for lifeguards to ensure the safety of residents and guests through preventative strategies and water safety education. Lifeguards also act as first responders to incidents and emergencies within aquatic facilities.

Days, Hours & Additional Employment Details

This seasonal position runs from May 2025 through September 2025. Lifeguards are scheduled to work Sunday through Saturday, between 5:30 AM and 9 PM, up to 40 hours per week. Some weeks may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Recognize and respond quickly and effectively as the first responder.
• Engage with the public during active surveillance to enforce all aquatic facility rules.
• Inspect the facility daily, including testing pool water every 4 hours and reporting unsafe conditions promptly.
• Participate in all lifeguard in-service training sessions.
• Participate in unannounced emergency response scenarios.
• Maintain a fitness level consistent with American Red Cross lifeguard performance criteria.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

Physical Demands

While performing duties, employees must see, speak, and hear regularly. They must frequently stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 50 lbs.
