Job summary

Northern Kentucky University is seeking a Lifeguard for Campus Recreation. This part-time/temporary role focuses on safety, rule enforcement, and quick response to emergencies in the university aquatic facilities.

The position requires current lifeguard certification with CPR/AED and first aid, with NKU covering certification costs. Flexible scheduling and a $12 per hour pay rate are offered.

Qualifications

• Current lifeguard certification with CPR/AED for professional rescuers is required.
• First aid and safety certifications are highly recommended.
• WSI or equivalent is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the aquatic facility and assist with basic upkeep.
• Monitor pool and deck areas to ensure patron safety.
• Educate guests on pool rules and safety guidelines.
• Identify and remove potential safety hazards.
• Complete required records and incident documentation.
• Perform daily cleaning and maintenance tasks.
• Arrive on time and be prepared for shifts.
• Communicate effectively with lifeguards, supervisors, and staff.
• Participate in required trainings and staff meetings.

About the Role

Campus Recreation lifeguards play a vital role in keeping our aquatic facilities safe, fun, and welcoming for everyone. Lifeguards help prevent accidents in the pool and surrounding deck areas by staying alert, enforcing facility rules, and responding quickly and professionally to emergencies. Lifeguards are expected to maintain required certifications and physical readiness in line with industry standards. Attendance at all staff meetings and in‑service training sessions is required to ensure everyone is prepared and confident on the job.

Primary Responsibilities

• Supervising the aquatic facility and assisting with basic facility upkeep.
• Monitoring pool and deck areas to ensure patron safety.
• Educating guests on pool rules and safety guidelines.
• Identifying and removing potential safety hazards.
• Following verbal and written instructions from supervisors.
• Completing required records and incident documentation.
• Performing daily cleaning and maintenance tasks.
• Arriving on time and prepared for scheduled shifts.
• Communicating effectively with fellow lifeguards, supervisors, and campus staff.
• Participating in all required in‑service trainings and staff meetings.

Qualifications

• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer OR YMCA Lifeguard Certification with ASHI CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
• Standard First Aid Certifications in Bloodborne Pathogens and Administering Emergency Oxygen are highly recommended.
• Water Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent certification is a plus.
• NKU will pay for you to get certified.

Work Schedule and Pay

$12 per hour. Part‑time/flexible schedule.
