Description

Being an outdoor Lifeguard is one of the most fun jobs you can have in the summer. If you like being outside, if you like working on a team, if you enjoy being a role model and giving back to the community, working at one of The SAY's Community Pools may be for you!

The SAY operates two seasonal Outdoor Pool Facilities, The Berkeley Heights Community Pool at the YMCA, located at 59 Locust Ave, Berkeley Heights, NJ and The Springfield Community Pool, located at 44 Morrison Road, Springfield, NJ 07081. There are open Lifeguard positions for both locations. Candidates who can work at both facilities are desirable.

The Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. They create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with Y policies and procedures.

This position is seasonal with an opportunity to work up to 40 hours each week. Wages are competitive, starting at $17.00/hour, but based on experience.

The active Outdoor Pool season runs from Late May - Early September with some pre-season work/training. Mandatory Pre-Season Training dates are 5/11, 5/12, 5/18, and 5/19.

Essential Functions:

  1. Maintains constant surveillance of the water, deck, and pool areas at all times. Actively scans the pool to achieve a 10 x 10 reaction time and practice preventative lifeguarding.
  2. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  3. Maintains a professional attitude and appearance, wearing the proper uniform/equipment for each shift.
  4. Gives 100% attention to the patrons and operation of the pool area. Is alert, vigilant, and conscientious.
  5. Performs light housekeeping of the aquatics facility as needed (cleaning pool, moving of deck equipment, etc.).
  6. Maintains current certifications (Lifeguard, CPR-PR, First-Aid).
  7. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Y policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  8. Stays in good physical condition to properly perform necessary skills as a lifeguard.
  9. Weekly completes a 500-yard swim (20 laps).
  10. Attends all scheduled meetings, trainings, and events.
  11. Completes other duties as assigned (testing chemicals, minor housekeeping, etc.).
  12. As an Ambassador for the Y, communicates to members, volunteers, and the general public that the Y is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

Requirements:

  1. Current certificate in American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard.
  2. Current Certification in Professional Rescuer CPR/AED and First Aid.
  3. Ability to obtain certification for Emergency Oxygen Administration, Asthma Inhaler, and Epi-Pen Administration prior to summer season.
  4. Must be a minimum of 15 years old.
